The 45 Shirt: FMF x Listen Clothing

A while back I put out the 45 shirt design, but just couldn’t get a collaboration that was quite right. However, as like minded individuals seem to always get together, the collaboration between Flea Market Funk and Listen Clothing begins. I have been a fan and supporting this company since their inception, and when I was on tour a few years back, my man Renz sent me a box of Listen stuff that has been worn on countless gigs, tours, and the like. Listen Clothing has been preserving the music, culture, and quality artists for over 10 years through their clothing and accessory lines. I am proud to announce the first (of many hopefully) Limited Edition tee shirt collaborations between Flea Market Funk and Listen: The 45 shirt.

Here’s a shirt that all you 45 heads have been fiending for: a nod to graphic design and typography combined with some great Funk and Soul 45 bands. There are some easy finds on here as well as some Holy Grails. We all have some of them, we all want some of them, but the bottom line is that these records are appreciated. I wanted to help preserve these artists in one of the most creative ways I could think of, the tee. We’re also working on some limited edition prints as well. After all, it’s “The Way We Live”.

Stay tuned for more details about buying this design in shirt and print form.

Eula Cooper Live! in Brooklyn

Dope flyer by Soulmarcosa

For all you Funk and Soulsters in the Tri-State area, the good people over at Dig Deeper have got another hot show for you. In the past, they have brought you artists like Syl Johnson, Winfield Parker, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Willie West, Kings Go Forth, Marva Whitney, Darrow Fletcher and more. On January 28th they bring back Soul Sister Eula Cooper for the second time since 2008. Eula Cooper, known for her small string of sides released on Tragar and Note Records, as well as Atlantic, will be bringing her Georgia heat to the stage at Southpaw, backed up by The MAP Legends. Meah Pace will be the opener, and as usual, Mr. Robinson and DJ Honky will be spinning the Funk and Soul 45′s in between acts and late into the night.

Dig Deeper does a great job bringing these sometimes long forgotten Funk and Soul artists to NYC, many who have never performed here during their early careers. Their events have grown pretty huge, getting spotlighted in magazines like The New Yorker, and drawing audiences from pretty far. So if you’re in the market for some real, live, Funk and Soul, Dig Deeper have got your fix this weekend.

On Point: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 13

As the year draws to a close, my Ace Hotel Live Mix series has come up to volume 13. Drawing inspiration from one of the best 70′s car flicks Vanishing Point, On Point: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 13 is a culmination of songs that I’d love top have blasting if I was driving a super charged muscle car from SLC to SF, hopped up on goofballs and being led by a blind Soul DJ who knows just what to say. There are some Funk treats from the De Wolfe Librarie, Badder Than Evil, Rudy Ray Moore, plus a quick nod to Ralph MacDONALD, good Hip Hop from Damu the Fudgemonk, classic Pete Rock and CL Smooth remixed, funky Soul from the Pazant Brothers, The Mighty Ryders and Philly’s own Monica, a Bob James Cover from Taggy Matcher , a few Action Bronson original samples from Dry Bread (a Numero Group reissue) and Anglo Saxon Brown, smooth tunes from Tommy McCook, and the Menehan Street Band, fellow left coast Ace Hotel DJ/producer DJ Day from 2007, and some reissued mid 70′s sophisticated Soul from Jerline and Friends. A perfect Soundtrack to get charged up and then wind down to. Enjoy!

Big Ups with Akalepse

Featured

Today’s Big Ups is a special one, as I get 10 questions answered from Brooklyn’s own DJ Akalepse. Lepse has been holding down NYC for a long time, throwing proper DJ parties with real music, while also producing and putting out some of the best Funk and Soul music with the acclaimed record label Truth and Soul. His weekly Wednesday night at LPR alongside Rich Medina has had heavyweight guests that included J-Rocc, DJ Spinna, Crazy Legs, Dwele, Easy Mo Bee, and many more, if you thought you could take the night lightly. It is my distinct pleasure to be able to bring him to the pages of Big Ups.

FMF x COS Contest Winner

I’m happy to announce our winner for the Flea Market Funk x Cultures of Soul contest. It was none other than David Lerner from Columbia, MD, who correctly identified Brother Jack McDuff “Oblighetto” as the first 45 I ever reviewed. Some were close and said Dennis Coffey “Scorpio”, but indeed the good Brother Jack was my first 45 I put up over 4 years ago. How much we have changed here at FMF, but I still remain dedicated to keep this music alive. In the upcoming weeks, I’m going to do another first, have a pledge drive here at FMF, (with some goodies to give away as well) so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that.

I wanted to shout out Jeff from Cultures of Soul for providing me with the give always, and of course to you, the reader for taking an interest in FMF. You guys keep me going every day and drive me to keep diggin’ deep. Cheers-

Strap: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Ten

This week’s Live Ace Hotel Mix is all about the Strap, aka the champion’s belt (of beats). We have some heat from Illadelph and the Roots, remixed by the Beatminerz to start if off (NYC and Philly both repping the old school wrestling meccas), right into a guy who could literally wrestle, Action Bronson (Big Up Queens, NY!) into a prematch National Anthem from Radiohead (reworked by me and a beat from Preemo), through some flowers from Dudley Perkins (for the ladies of the ring) to defunct BK rock/rapper’s New Kingdom (Althea has a posse, if you remember this record you are good.) not a frontman like Jimmy Hart, 3 sides that could be wrestling moves from Roots Manuva, Rusty Bryant, and Jackie Mittoo, Funk from the Sugarman Three, Lord Finesse who could wrestle under the name of Funky Technician, Thes One providing a target, Danger Doom telling it like it really is, beats from Riton, Dilla and King Yellowman, and Latin infused beats from Chico Mann to help round off the mix as well. Shout out to Bruno Sammartino and Ric Flair for keeping me glued to the TV as a kid. Enjoy.

Bruno Intro
The Roots – Proceed (Beatminererz Mix)
Radiohead/Lox – Recognize the National Anthem (Prestige Mix)

Rise Up! Soundtrack To A Revolution: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Nine

I’m not a political guy, however I do respect people’s rights to protest, freedom of speech, right to assembly, and for someone to stand up for what they think is right. Sometimes when a revolution or movement happens and is in it’s infancy, there may not be a clear leader or a structured manifesto yet, but you can feel the world changing around you. As a New Yorker, for the last two months plus I have seen something not just happening here in NYC, but all over the world. People are standing up for things they believe in, and the world is noticing.

As with movements, there will be some bad apples that spoil the bunch, jump on the band wagon, and give it a bad name. That’s to be expected. Last Thursday I watched raw footage all day of thousands of people that took the streets, stopped traffic, and made their voice heard. I may not agree with everything people do, but I do respect and agree with the freedom of speech, and it’s what gave me the idea for this mix. Here are a handful of songs that I feel could be the soundtrack to a revolution. These artists talked of power, greed, corruption, and the resistance against it. The world is changing right in front of our eyes people . If you sit idle and get walked over, you have no voice, and will get lost in the shuffle. Stand up and be heard, not matter what cause or percent you are. Gil Scott-Heron said the revolution would not be televised, but Smoove said it would be televised, and he was right. Last week was proof. Enjoy.

Rise Up! Soundtrack To A Revolution: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Nine Track List

Dead Prez – Propaganda
Gil Scott-Heron- The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Baby Huey – Hard Times
The O’Jays – For The Love Of Money
Stevie Wonder – You Haven’t Done Nothin’

Above The Law – Freedom of Speech
War – War Is Coming

Junior Murvin – Police and Thieves
Bob Marley/ Damian Marley – Stand Up Jamrock (Ashley Beedle Edit)
Marvin Gaye – Trouble Man
Fela Kuti and Nigeria ’70 – Zombie

Music Is The Weapon: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 7

For this week’s Ace Hotel Live Mix, I decided to take a little trip. Mind you I didn’t plan on it, it just sort of unfolded that way. This week we jet from France with Serge Gainsbourg to Brazil with Arthur Verocai and Super Erotica, to the UK with T.Love, and finish up in Jamaica with U-Roy and Super Beagle. In between we visit some backpacking, head nodding instrumentals from Pete Rock, Thes-One from PUTS, and the ever changing DOOM, Hip Hop from PE and the Pharcyde, plus the funky Soul of Inell Young and Laura Lee.

With so much stuff going on in the world today, I wanted to take a quote from the great Fela Kuti, when he said “Music is the weapon of the future”. Any one of these songs could be used as a weapon, as music can change the world. This mix was done all live, in one take, and any pop, crackle, or skip you hear is exactly how you’re going to hear it at any of my Friday nights at the Ace Hotel in NYC. Good Music brought to you by DJ Prestige and Flea Market Funk. Enjoy.

Original Stylin’: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 6

Another week is upon us and well, here’s another mix. This week’s mix brings the bachelor pad tropical Funk of Les Baxter, some reworked De La Soul from the DeLaSoviet project with another De La sampled track by Taana Gardner, El Michels Affair adding a children’s vocal Wu Tang Clan cover plus a Bomb Squad remix of the Budos Band, West Coast Soul from A Combination of Sound and the Latin infused Hip Hop music of Ozomatli, the Visioneers payin’ tribute to Isaac Hayes, Willie Bobo and the Bo Gents doing their thang, Raw Dog’s own DJ Louis Slipperz from the UK (let’s not forget the great MC Maestro), the hilltop Hustlers outta Philly 3 x Dope, Harold Mabern doing his cover of the Jackson 5, plus Reggae styles of Faithless (yes I did it), King Yellowman, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and The Upsetters.

It’s also a little tribute to to a pair of my favorite designers Charles and Ray Eames, with a a molded plastic rocker on the cover. The furniture and music have so much original stylin’ in them (let’s not forget another Herb Lubalin tribute with the reworked fonts in the name) that this is my favorite mix of the series so far. Enjoy it, and if you like it, feel free to pass it on to a friend.

El-P: Rush Over Brooklyn

If you can’t get down with Rush, you ain’t shit! El-P, who has a record coming out of Fat Possum (R.L. Burnside,T Model Ford, Black Keys, etc.) shortly, has done a remix of his single “drones over Brooklyn” sampling Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”. Now he has done this legally, through Legitmix. Legitmix has been around for a minute and guys like Diplo have been supporting it, so you know it’s well, legit. Besides this track being bad ass, the proceeds go to a good cause: a fund for Mr. Dibbs, who we reported the other day has some serious health issues. Another great dude helping out a really great cause. Brooklyn stand up! Then sit down and air drum that Neil Pert stuttered drum solo.

The Stuyvesants: The Finer Things Vol. 1 and 2

Our favorite Brooklyn duo is at it again. You might remember the write up we did on The Stuyvesants release “Stoops, Parks and Rooftops” a few months back. This is the kind of releases we dig over here at FMF. Not only is the music spot on, but the design is on point as well. Designer Darien Victor Birks (Flwpt) and producer Allan Cole (Algorythm) make beautiful music together. The kind you may have heard in Brooklyn in the 70′s. They do it and do it well (like LL) and these two releases, after the unexpected success and positive feedback from their first release Brooklyn’s Finest, follow up nicely and look to be just as successful.

“ The two wanted to work together on a project where they could incorporate several of their talents, related to music and design. They wanted to do this under a moniker that would pay homage to the ’70s. The collaboration allowed them to do four major things, design, beat dig, produce amazing music, and simply have fun ”

You may notice, that aurally, the music is a bit different than Brooklyn’s Finest, released only five short months ago, but packs a soulful punch that’s both effective and enjoyable. Sweet soul, organ riffs, falsetto screams, and good lovin’ dominate the 20 track first volume as you take a stroll back in time in your mind. The music reminds you of artists like Barbara Acklin and Brenda and the Tabulations with Jay Dee producing them. The beats are solid, tight, and in the groove. Volume Two is bringing you back with a Persuaders kinda vibe, your velvet robe on loose, a Blue Nun bottle open, the fire burning, your girl looking fine, the hi-fi just right, but this time, the wine doesn’t just go well with the chicken, it’s the Stuyvesants that go well with everything. If there is such a thing as the sophomore slump, than The Stuyvesants plow right through it like a hot knife through butter. You will be wanting more from this Bed-Stuy duo, and at the rate they are putting releases out, it’s most likely in the works. The Stuyvesants, spreading love, because you know, it’s the Brooklyn way.

Debo Band – Gedawo (Kiddid Gedawo Remix)

Electric Cowbell has another batch of 45′s ready to go. The Brooklyn Boutique label is hot off of it’s 101 Things To Do in Bongolia, a retrospect of it’s first singles from 2010-2011. Well received all around, the label has been called “the hardest working new label in Brooklyn” by the Village Voice and this latest group of 7″ releases backs that up. In the upcoming weeks, releases from Karthala 72, No! BS Brass Band, Sway Machinery, OS Magrelos, Little Shalimar, Cheick Diabate, and the band featured today: Debo Band. They will be available in limited runs of 45s on quality vinyl as of October 11th.

“ Electric Cowbell Records is a Brooklyn-based record label started by Jim Thomson that releases vinyl 45 records with no genre-specific agenda. ”

Here’s what the label had to say about the first release, “Debo Band – Gedawo (Kiddid Gedawo Remix)

“Debo Band returns to the Electric Cowbell roster with another hit out of the park! “Gedawo” is an Ethio-funk classic by the great singer Ayalew Mesfin who recorded several hits in the 1970s. Recorded live in Ethiopia, this version features the background vocals, clapping, and traditional drumming of the group Fendika, Debo’s vibrant collaborators from Addis Ababa. A perfect vehicle for charismatic Debo-frontman Bruck Tesfaye, Gedawo is a rousing dance anthem performed by a contemporary 15-piece funk powerhouse. In stark contrast, Kiddid’s B-side “Gedubwo Mix” swaps drum kit and sousaphone for drum machine and square-wave, flipping the tune on its head into digi-dub territory. A chugging Tubby-esque take on the raucous original. Comes in medium weight 7″ brown paper sleeve with full-color vintage postage stamp sticker of the group on the sleeve.” These releases are a great example of what we like here at Flea Market Funk: quality music (and quality remixes) brought to you by people who believe in the music, and aren’t just doing it to make the money. Old Style: The Ace Hotel Mix 3

Another week is here, and Friday night I’ll be kicking another 6 hours plus on the turntables over at The Ace Hotel in NYC. Here is a preview of some stuff you might here in that time. The design and mix are based on a Wolves program from the early 70′s with great Northern Ireland player Derek Dugan and contains commentary from a match between Wolves v. Everton at the Molineux in 1970, updated of course for 2011, sort of. I’m a football fan, so I love to dig on some of these old style players, haircuts, uniforms, and of course the classic matches. A great inspiration.

This week I’ve got some Left Coast Hip Hop in case you missed them in Common Market and Jake One (one of my favorite producers), a newer Jill Scott track featuring Mos Def (or Yasin at the moment), some Jay Z sampled MSFB, funky stuff with James Spencer, Classic Hip Hop in Brand Nubian and Audio Two, a great Funk band who just dropped their new record, Deep Street Soul out of Australia via the UK, a Steinski remix off of the new Dennis Coffey record, Olympic Runners, Mophono aka DJ Centipede just killing “The Shuffle”, and on again back to Jamaica with classics from Horace Andy and King Tubby, The Jamaicans, and an obscure tune from Eric Barnett (apparently one of Rodigan’s fave tracks, soon to be yours). Just a short little jaunt that will lead you to the long musical journey on Friday nights. I’m keepin’ it movin’ and keepin’ it funky as always, all night long. Enjoy.

Old Style: The Ace Hotel Mix 3 Track List

Dugan Scores Old Style Intro
