Big Ups with Jazzman Gerald

Featured

Of all of the Big Up interviews (which btw have all been great in my opinion), this has been the most anticipated. Jazzman Gerald is a guy who does things the way he wants. In other words, he is the guy who set the bar for reissues and bringing the underdog artist to the public’s eyes and ears. He has been doing it well, taking care of the artists he reissues, all the while running a record label dynasty that is quite impressive. When not DJing rare music all over the world, he’s keeping all the record collectors, DJs, producers and artists scrambling to get his latest releases and compilations. Heard he’s a football supporter, but no mention of it in the interview. Gerald get at me on that! It is an honor for us to have Gerald in this latest installment of Big Ups. Enjoy!

Big Ups with Sport Casual

Check mixes for semi-regular of the Latin, Jamaican, Soul, and Boogie varieties.

Here’s a sweet mix Sport Casual just passed on to me: Jamaican Funk. Get it here.

Huge shout out to Sport Casual for getting my ass to BK in the old days to spin in a closet of a bar while up 15 band members played Afro Soul and I got to spin my fave 45′s. Those were the good old days. Cheers to that.

04.17.10 Record Store Day, Asbury Park Style

There are many reasons we all love vinyl: the sound, the feel, the album cover, the liner notes, the instant gratification of putting the needle on the record so the drum beat goes like this…..But what of the record store? You know, the place where you go to get your vinyl. In recent years, there have been less and less of these places. Sure you can got to any big city: New York City, Philly, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, London, etc., and you’ll find thriving shops with vinyl ranging from Punk Rock to Turkish Funk to Jamaican Dub and beyond. How about the smaller, rural areas? You may find some Mom and Pop places, who have Stax dead stock from when Harvey Scales put out his 7″ (in that case you’re damn lucky), or the odd little nook that has some Danzig 45′s up on the wall (fat chance). You may even find that place called a record store that has like 3 picture discs of Gaslight Anthem and the rest of the store is full of tees and ‘zines. Whatever the case is, they’re selling vinyl. You know, a 7″, 10″ or 12″ round thing that you have to put on a turntable to listen to. I don’t care if you’re listening to it through a Fisher Price portable, a Sound Burger, a console turntable that looks like a piece of furniture, some 1200′s, or one that rips it easily into an MP3, you’re playing vinyl, and that’s what matters. You see, even though there is a resurgence of vinyl releases (I mean they never really went away, despite what the naysayers shout), there is a disappearance of the record store. Long gone were the days when you had to go to the department store (mine was a KMart) to pick up some new releases. I still have that Eric B. and Rakim “Paid In Full” Cold Crush Remix from the day it got released. I saved up and bought that, as well as Devo’s “Whip It” on 45. From there I graduated to an actual record store, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I was in between 7th and 8th grade, and when I went there, I got lost. Golden Age Hip Hop, Reggae, R & B, Rock, Dance, you name it, it was there. Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit” was played over and over. I wanted that 12″, and I wanted to learn to do what DST was doing over the beats. When I finally saw him scratching on the video, I tried to do it on my own stereo, with not much luck. That’s for another day though. I can remember driving an hour to get to Vintage Vinyl in Ocean, NJ (RIP), the Princeton Record Exchange, Rock & Soul, Fat Beats, and then when I went on tour, every record store across the country in every city we played in. Fast forward to 2010. The digital age and the digital DJ are all around us. Some things have made it easy for real DJs (Serato, thankfully, and you still get to spin vinyl. You still have to be able to DJ though, it’s not a free pass), while other things have given access to a whole generation of kids who have never even touched or felt what a record is. To me, if you’re a DJ and you haven’t ever, or refuse to use a record, you’re missing out. I’m not saying that DJs aren’t capable of mixing CDs, because there are a few that have made it. Kudos to them. However, if you talk to any major DJ, you’ll find that they got their start with vinyl, fell in love with vinyl, and don’t stop buying vinyl. That’s a fact. In fact, most people who are vinyl obsessed revolve their life around it. I can admit I am one of them.

So, that’s where we are for this post. On Saturday April 17th, from 12 noon til 2 PM I will be DJing at Hold Fast on Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park, in honor of Record Store Day. You can review their event page here. Let’s remember to give support wherever you are to all those record stores that feed our vinyl habit. I’ll be spinning an all 45 set of Deep Funk and Raw Soul, plus some other surprises. There is no admission, so if you’re in the area, come check out some great choons in Asbury Park. I’m going on early due to a prior engagement, so grab a mimosa and some brunch and groove to some afternoon cheer. See you there. Keep Diggin’!

08.14.09 45 Sessions Recap

A little personal touch on some sale items from Pat.

Well, the last 45 Sessions of the Summer really went off with a bang. We had just about all the 45 Session Crew (who brought HEAT by the way), and guest selector Primitive Soundsystem (Pat James Longo) killed it! Put that together with a good crowd and it makes for a really good send off to the Summer Sessions. DJ Bluewater’s set was so good that he played til he ran out of records! I was too busy yakking to Pat and buying some records from him. I will put both of the 45′s I copped on a future mix. Funky 16 Corners, fresh off some DC success at Marvin and Saint X, got things moving quickly. Pat Longo’s set was amazing, he went from Jazz Funk heat to Latin to some really great Funk and Soul. I shortened my set but tried to throw in some different stuff (some B-Sides) and a special record I had overnighted for Friday. The secret B-Boy break from Nolan. M>Fasis paid tribute to Michael Jackson, and the hardest working chef who’s a DJ, Prime Mundo finished off the night lovely. Fun was had by all, and I’m excited to be able to do it again in a few months. Keep Diggin’!

Tonight! Asbury Park 45 Sessions!

Well we all know you’ve been waiting for it, and the final 45 Session of the Summer of 2009 is upon us. We have a great Guest Selector in Primitive Sound System (Pat James Longo). He’s a great guy with deep crates and a great love of music. If you are anywhere near the Asbury Park area tonight, I suggest you come out, because it’s the last of the Summer. Let’s make the Summer go out with a bang! I’m doing something I never do this session, flying by the seat of my pants and playing some stuff I might not otherwise. We’ll see. I do have 2 really great records I can’t wait to play. You’ll have to come out to see. Keep Diggin’!

Asbury Park 45 Sessions x Metromix

I thought that the Flea Market Funk extended family would like to see some more photos from the last 45 Sessions on June 12th, 2009. They were taken by Mike Mclaughlin, local photog hero. Check out all the photographs here on the Jersey Shore Metro Mix. We’re also going to be in the Islander newspaper this week as well, so if you’re in Jersey, pick it up. Cheers to the Asbury Park Press for giving us some shine this past session. Keep Diggin”

**PS: Check me out in Beachcruiser Magazine Online here.

Friday June 12th: Asbury Park 45 Sessions LIVE!

Well, it’s that time again folks. If you like Funk and Soul spun on all 45′s, well then you will have to motivate and get out to the World Famous Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ. I have been doing this party with the 45 Sessions crew for 2 years, and it just keeps getting stronger. Where else in NJ are you going to get to hear the foundations of today’s music spun on vinyl, let alone on 45? Stop getting all excited that Scion has DJ’s with 45′s, we’ve been doing it for over two years strong, right in your back yard! The usual suspects will all be out bringing you the best in Deep funk, Raw Soul, and other surprises, all on 7″. So walk, run, drive, hitch hike, or however you can down to the Lanes. It’s only $5. Support your local Funk and Soul DJ. The Asbury 45 Sessions is preserving Funk and Soul, one 45 at a time. To see what kinds of stuff we spin, do a search for “45 Sessions” in the box to the lower left. Keep Diggin! Hope to see you out.

Flea Market Funk x Parkdale Funk

I have been trying to catch up on some mixes, so this is a little project I had in the can for a while. I can’t pass up doing a new one, and even without the latest acquisitions, I have more than enough material to throw down a few Jazz, Soul, or Raw Funk and Soul Mixes. There will be some Reggae involved in the near future as well. According to the poll from the weekend’s post, so far people want more Raw Funk and Soul, but the voting isn’t over yet. It will be closed soon, so make sure you get your vote in. I thank everyone for voting and giving me feedback here at FMF. It always means so much. Let’s get down to business.

When I got contacted a few months ago by Double K over at Parkdale Funk to do a guest mix to help relaunch the new and improved Parkdale Funk, I couldn’t say no. I love what he’s doing in the T dot O, and why wouldn’t I? We all do it for the same reason: the love of the music! This mix may be a little different than you’re used to here at Flea Market Funk, but the underlying feel is still funky all the way through. Go on over to Pardale Funk and pick it up HERE!

SOUL! Broadcasting While Black

Host Eddie Hazlip talking to Amiri Baraka

I got this nugget passed along to me from Joe Knipes about a good thing going on at Channel Thirteen. For those of you not in the know, Channel Thirteen (WNET) is a public TV channel out of New York. For my whole life, I’ve watched everything from Children’s programs to Science and News programs, to Music performances on public television. I’m very proud to announce to my readers that they have the series SOUL!, which ran from 1968 to 1973 in 39 episodes (6 streaming live so far) on their website. An all African American variety show, celebrating African American Culture and Music, the list of guests were a who’s who in Black America. Guests ranging from Ashford and Simpson to Nikki Giovanni to Muhammad Ali to Rasaan Roland Kirk to Ron Carter to James Baldwin and every major player in Black culture at the time. This show not only served a musical purpose, it would be used as a political sounding board to promote activisim and awareness in the Black community. It’s musical guest were from all genres: Funk, Soul, Jazz, and World Music. It’s also the first television show of it’s kind on WNET to be recorded to video tape, rather than live. This television show was revolutionary to put it lightly, and it’s a really great thing that the episodes are being offered for FREE on their website in their entirety. This is something that is going to bring a lot of people (this author included) many hours of happiness. So if you are interested in how the world was from 1968 to 1973 from a Black perspective, check out the interviews, music, and social commentary from SOUL! You’ll be glad you did. There is also an interview with director Stan Lathan here.

Before you go, check out the release from WNET in 1968:

The format of Soul! resembles some of the popular late night programs – segmented, lively, informative and entertaining.

Appearing on the show will be top stars and up-and-coming young talents from the black community. There will also be pertinent features dealing with all aspects of the social, cultural and artistic life of the black population.

During the course of the year Soul! expects to have as its guests such people as: Cannonball Adderley, Muhammad Ali, Amanda Ambrose, The Associations, Oscar Brown Jr., James Brown, Billy Eckstein, Richie Havens, The Impressions, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, George Shirley, Nina Simone, Jo Simon, The Supremes, Irwin C. The second program in the series will be Thursday, September 26, at 9:00 pm. Starting October 10, Soul! will be seen every week on Thursday night at the same hour.

This series is being made possible by a special grant from the Ford Foundation under its Project for New Television Programming.

Soul!, an entertainment-talk program aimed at the Black community premiered on Thursday, September 12th 1968, at 9:00 pm.”

02.20.09 Asbury Park 45 Sessions

The 45 Sessions have returned to the World Famous Asbury Lanes. On Friday February 20th, we’re gonna go back, way back, back into time. A time when you played music just because you loved it, and if you got paid, well that was a bonus. A time when James Brown influenced everyone, and regional bands made limited run records of JB covers or JB ripoffs that eventually went long out of print. We gonna unearth these gems one by one. 6 DJ’s with different styles and different records that come together as one as the Asbury 45 Sessions Crew. You’re gonna have to travel a bit to find another unique night like this in this area. In fact, you won’t find another one until you reach NYC. We’re representing Jersey, 45 Records, Asbury Park, and of course this music that has to stay alive on 45 RPM. See you then and tell a friend. Keep Diggin’!.

10.03.08 Asbury Park 45 Sessions Recap

The latest edition of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions kind of creeped up on us, and like that, it was gone. However, that’s not to say that it wasn’t a good night. We had a great guest set played by The 45 Killer, who played African Funk that was just plain ridiculous. We had the Devil Dick throwing out an all 45 Hip Hop set and finishing up with the 2 Live Crew. We had Larry from Funky 16 Corners hitting hard with some Soul and drum breaks. We had Prime Mundo making them dance, M.Fasis working a great Carol King cover with the original to start his set, Lou Bluewater killing it from end to end with the new and old Funk, and I played some Rock breaks and finished up with some fun Funky stuff. This night has really turned into something special, and I thank all who came out, Djed, and all who have patient with the non returned phone calls and e mails throughout the last couple of months. I appreciate the understanding. That being said, here are some photos of the night, as well as the set lists. More sets as they come in. Keep Diggin’!

07.18.08 Asbury Park 45 Sessions Recap

The 45′s were so hot we broke the fan!

This 45 Sessions was definitely a special one. All the nights are basically free form, as long as you play it on 7 inch. We all bring the Deep Funk and Soul, but it’s always nice when someone throws in some Classic Rock Breaks, Hip Hop, or some good Reggae in the mix. What we did tonight, is just switch every half an hour, so each of the five DJ’s had to be on their toes, and so did the audience. The night had a little bit of drama, but when isn’t there any at a bar, filled with people drinking and bowling? We got a great write up in the local paper the day of, and I thank the Asbury Park Press for hooking that up. Here’s a few photos of the night, as well as my play list. More play lists as they come in.

Guest Mix Series and a Nice Write Up

I know that I normally do not post up on Thursdays, but today is a special occasion. It’s been two weeks in a row that I got some shine here in the blogosphere from some good people. Eric over at Dirt Castle was kind enough to put me up with the big boys and their mixes last week, and Evan Mix of Listen In did a feature on FMF yesterday. It definitely excites me that this blog is getting out there to people that are as passionate about this music as I am. Big Ups to all of you, and more great things to come here in the future.

Which leads me to the following announcement: The Flea Market Funk Guest DJ Series is about to kick off at the end of this month. I told you I wanted to do something special for the first year anniversary, so I decided to combine that with my rapid approach to 200,000 hits (which is unbelievable, it seems that I was just at 100,000). I’ve sought out a bunch of people who have been contributing to this Funk and Soul game for a long time, as well as some of my peers, who definitely have some great music to share. This list is far from complete, but as of FMF time today, I had commitments from the following DJ’s:

-Cosmo Baker (The Rub)
-DJ Mr. Supreme (Soul Gorilla)
-Larry Grogan (Funky 16 Corners)
-Jason Perlmutter (Carolina Funk)
-DJ Bluewater (Bluewater Music)
-COOP (the Artist)
-Aaron Soma (Milwaukee, WI )
-DJ Prime (Prime Cuts Ltd.)

I’m pretty excited to start this off, and even more excited to bring some other DJs into the mix. I will keep you posted on the progress of the project and when exactly we’re gonna kick it off. Thanks for all the support and Keep Diggin’!

Tomorrow! Asbury Lanes Record Sale

For all you guys making the trek, I’ll be there around 10 for load in. Last months was a real great time, and I hear there will be some new vendors setting up. Hope to see you all there. I’ll be at the Red Bulls home opener tonight, so look for me in ESC 101. Keep Diggin’!
