FMF presents: The 10 for a $1 JB 45 Mix

A few years ago I was in a hurry to leave my local digging spot. I was supposed to make an appointment, and as usual I was neck deep in vinyl. Knowing I was really late, I was jogging to my car when I saw this box. It was a giant washing machine detergent box overflowing with 45s. I mean 7″s were on the ground, in the sand and tumbling out of this box. I tried to make a quick $10 dollar ploy for this monstrosity to the seller, a total dick record dealer, but the guy wouldn’t budge. He said $20, I said “bet” (and I still do), and off I went. I was driving home and digging through this box while driving. One eye on the road, one hand on the wheel, the other eye and hand on and in the box. What was in the box of goodness I found out, was a lot of rinked up, semi-playable, unsleeved 45s. At a light I pulled out Mickey and the Soul Generation’s “Iron Leg” on Maxwell. $20 well spent, and I was pumped. However, later on,, I got rid of all the garbage records when I was finally able to go through the box properly. The others I put in a bin, and kind of forgot about them for a few years. There were roughly 200 45s in the box, so that’s 10¢ a piece (plus the score of M&TSG). Yesterday, for no particular reason, I felt like looking in the box. The result is the mix you have before you. I wish I had done this before, but I didn’t. I was smart enough, however, to put all the James Brown and James Brown Production stuff on the top, and here’s what I came up with:

FMF presents: The $1 JB 45 Mix.

Let A Man Come In and Do The Popcorn Part 1.
Superbad, Superslick, Part 1
Escapism Part 1

Funky Sole 11th Year Anniversary

I promote a bunch of East Coast Funk and Soul and music events on these pages, but I need to give a shout to the left coast. I have been a fan of this series of different music nights for a long time. When it was the Root Down, I would try and get my friends in LA to send me the promo flyers because they were so dope. I know I have a few around somewhere. Funky Sole has definitely evolved in the past eleven years. They have had a who’s who of guests at all incarnations of the party (Keb Darge, J-Rocc, Adrian Younge, DJ Nu-Mark, Quantic, Chairman Mao, DJ Shadow, Skeme Richards(among others) and official DJs Clifton, Music Man Miles, DJ Chico, the gang of DJs known as the Soul Travelers, a rotating cast of LA DJs, and unofficial residents Cut Chemist and Egon who have blessed the turntables while opening people’s minds to all kinds of new, funky music from all over the world. Not commercial music. Not radio music. REAL MUSIC. The best part about it? It’s free, every week, and right smack in the middle of all the action.

“It wasn’t like Cut Chemist playing hits, or Egon playing hits, we were experimenting with different types of stuff. It wasn’t just Deep Funk, it was Ethiopian Soul, Psychedelic, Ghanaian, Salsa, Cumbia, Funk, Old School Hip Hop and obscure Cosmic Disco, twisted, dusted, psychedelia. Whatever we wanted to play. ”

I definitely wanted to shout out Miles and the Funky Sole crew, as they have been doing parties the way they should be done since day one. They do it and do it well. If you are out in LA and haven’t been to this party, I urge you to get there and get turned on to a whole different vibe. Miles describes the party itself as “A dance party where we celebrate mostly 60′s to early 70′s Funk Soul music, whether it’s instrumental or vocal. If it’s funky and it moves people on the dance floor, that’s what works at Funky Sole. And vinyl.” Sounds like my kind of place. Hit ‘em up when you’re in the LA area.

FMF presents: Lost Soul 45 Mix

After a short break for the New Year’s holiday, we’re back here at FMF. I’ve got a special treat for you. I did this mix at the end of 2011 for a special podcast, which should be out shortly on another site’s series, but since it’s the new year, I thought I would throw it up here to see what you guys think. I was particularly feeling some Soul 45′s that day, most of these records I haven’t used before on a mix (with the exception of a snippet of the the Willie Hobbs tune that was used on the first FMF mix ever in 2007, the Witches and the Warlock, and the Lee Williams I believe). If I’ve repeated some tunes, I apologize, but they are so good!

This mix is a tribute to all the lovers, the fighters, the heartbroken, the love struck, and those that still believe in this thing called love. Please enjoy and pass it on to a friend by spreading the love if you’re feeling this mix.

On Point: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 13

As the year draws to a close, my Ace Hotel Live Mix series has come up to volume 13. Drawing inspiration from one of the best 70′s car flicks Vanishing Point, On Point: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 13 is a culmination of songs that I’d love top have blasting if I was driving a super charged muscle car from SLC to SF, hopped up on goofballs and being led by a blind Soul DJ who knows just what to say. There are some Funk treats from the De Wolfe Librarie, Badder Than Evil, Rudy Ray Moore, plus a quick nod to Ralph MacDONALD, good Hip Hop from Damu the Fudgemonk, classic Pete Rock and CL Smooth remixed, funky Soul from the Pazant Brothers, The Mighty Ryders and Philly’s own Monica, a Bob James Cover from Taggy Matcher , a few Action Bronson original samples from Dry Bread (a Numero Group reissue) and Anglo Saxon Brown, smooth tunes from Tommy McCook, and the Menehan Street Band, fellow left coast Ace Hotel DJ/producer DJ Day from 2007, and some reissued mid 70′s sophisticated Soul from Jerline and Friends. Gourmet: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Eleven

I was going to put this up on Friday, but since the story about Jonathan Toubin broke, I thought that helping a fellow DJ in need was a little more important than my shameless self promotion through a live mix. Here’s an update from Brooklyn Vegan on his status.

That being said, here was my live mix from last week.

Who doesn’t like some Gourmet treats, especially if they’re beats? This week’s live mix has a little West Coast love from Suff Daddy, DJ Numark, and J Boogie, and some flavorings from the Soul Investigators, Willie Bobo (with help from Dan the Automator), Maggie Threat, and Julian Covey, a Primo sample from Jeff Beck, some fresh vegetables from Tony Rebel, a Cream cover by Spanky Wilson, Hip Hop from De La Soul (and a nod to Paul McCartney’s original) and repping the D, the SV aka Slum Village plus my fave new producer, Tall Black Guy.

The mix cover is a mock up of my own Gourmet magazine with my favorite weekly eats at the Ace Hotel, the Breslin burger. The best hamburger with pork belly and cheese you will have ever (let’s not forget the thrice cooked fries). Genius. Enjoy the mix, and if you like it, pass it on. Bon Appetit!

Gourmet: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Eleven Track List

Suff Daddy Featuring Miles Bonny – 5 O’Clock

Strap: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Ten

This week’s Live Ace Hotel Mix is all about the Strap, aka the champion’s belt (of beats). We have some heat from Illadelph and the Roots, remixed by the Beatminerz to start if off (NYC and Philly both repping the old school wrestling meccas), right into a guy who could literally wrestle, Action Bronson (Big Up Queens, NY!) into a prematch National Anthem from Radiohead (reworked by me and a beat from Preemo), through some flowers from Dudley Perkins (for the ladies of the ring) to defunct BK rock/rapper’s New Kingdom (Althea has a posse, if you remember this record you are good.) not a frontman like Jimmy Hart, 3 sides that could be wrestling moves from Roots Manuva, Rusty Bryant, and Jackie Mittoo, Funk from the Sugarman Three, Lord Finesse who could wrestle under the name of Funky Technician, Thes One providing a target, Danger Doom telling it like it really is, beats from Riton, Dilla and King Yellowman, and Latin infused beats from Chico Mann to help round off the mix as well. Shout out to Bruno Sammartino and Ric Flair for keeping me glued to the TV as a kid. Enjoy.

Bruno Intro

Rise Up! Soundtrack To A Revolution: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Nine

I’m not a political guy, however I do respect people’s rights to protest, freedom of speech, right to assembly, and for someone to stand up for what they think is right. Sometimes when a revolution or movement happens and is in it’s infancy, there may not be a clear leader or a structured manifesto yet, but you can feel the world changing around you. As a New Yorker, for the last two months plus I have seen something not just happening here in NYC, but all over the world. People are standing up for things they believe in, and the world is noticing.

As with movements, there will be some bad apples that spoil the bunch, jump on the band wagon, and give it a bad name. That’s to be expected. Last Thursday I watched raw footage all day of thousands of people that took the streets, stopped traffic, and made their voice heard. I may not agree with everything people do, but I do respect and agree with the freedom of speech, and it’s what gave me the idea for this mix. Here are a handful of songs that I feel could be the soundtrack to a revolution. These artists talked of power, greed, corruption, and the resistance against it. The world is changing right in front of our eyes people . If you sit idle and get walked over, you have no voice, and will get lost in the shuffle. Stand up and be heard, not matter what cause or percent you are. Gil Scott-Heron said the revolution would not be televised, but Smoove said it would be televised, and he was right. Last week was proof. Enjoy.

Rise Up! Soundtrack To A Revolution: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Nine Track List

Dead Prez – Propaganda
Gil Scott-Heron- The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Baby Huey – Hard Times
The O’Jays – For The Love Of Money
Stevie Wonder – You Haven’t Done Nothin’

War – War Is Coming

Junior Murvin – Police and Thieves
Bob Marley/ Damian Marley – Stand Up Jamrock (Ashley Beedle Edit)
Marvin Gaye – Trouble Man
Fela Kuti and Nigeria ’70 – Zombie

Blind Rhythm: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Eight

I decided to go back and pay tribute to one of my heroes, Mark Gonzales. His skateboarding and art all have rhythm, and I just thought how music and skateboarding go hand in hand. Think of this as a track to bump while you’re zooming through traffic, or rather what the Gonz or Jason Lee might listen to while hitting a late night sesh. Skateboarding was such a huge part of my life when I was younger, and I remember looking up to a guy like the Gonz, and now that we have grown up (and are the same age), wanted to give a nod to a guy who has shaped skateboarding and art in a huge way.

With Jazz influenced tracks from Madlib, J-Rocc and Bob James (an Arrested Development sample) , Hip Hop rarities from ATCQ featuring Jay Dee, Da Bush Babees and Bumpy Knuckles instrumentals, Rocksteady from Justin Hines and a Reggae influenced track from J Live as well as a head nodder to boot, Funk from Greyboy feat. Bart Davenport redoing Cymande, Lack of Afro turning Arctic Monkeys into a drum fest, Ethiopian sounds from Mulata Astatke, plus remixes of James Brown, Jimmy Smith and Bio Ritmo from Kenny Dope, Lyrics Born and E’s E respectively, wacky Ernest Bourgnine soundtrack Funk Rock and finishing up with some Ska. This mix was done all live and in one take. Please enjoy and pass it on.

Blind Rhythm: The Ace Hotel Live Mix Eight Track List

Tribute to the Gonz
Madlib – Slim’s Return
King Solomon – The Moon Walk
Billy Strange – put a Little Led In Your Zeppelin

FMF x The Ace Hotel NYC: Extended Stay

Photo Courtesy of Not Cot dot Com

It looks like the good people over at the Ace Hotel in NYC have appreciated the Flea Market Funk/ DJ Prestige Friday nights, as they have extended my residency until January 2012. That means that in December on Friday nights I will be holding down the decks in the lobby starting at 8pm. I’m excited for this, as the Ace is kind of like a home away from home. Good people, good music, and well, let’s not forget good food and a really classy hotel as well. So, if you’re looking for something to do on a Friday until the end of the year, I will be doing my thang over at the Ace, and there is no cover. A huge shout out to the staff and to the people that have been coming through, I appreciate the love. See you on Fridays, I’ll be the guy eating the best burger around before I star needle dropping some gems. Also, I plan on still dropping a new live mix every week until the end of the year, so stay tuned for that series of more mixes. Listen to the previous mixes here. Keep Diggin’!

Music Is The Weapon: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 7

For this week’s Ace Hotel Live Mix, I decided to take a little trip. Mind you I didn’t plan on it, it just sort of unfolded that way. This week we jet from France with Serge Gainsbourg to Brazil with Arthur Verocai and Super Erotica, to the UK with T.Love, and finish up in Jamaica with U-Roy and Super Beagle. In between we visit some backpacking, head nodding instrumentals from Pete Rock, Thes-One from PUTS, and the ever changing DOOM, Hip Hop from PE and the Pharcyde, plus the funky Soul of Inell Young and Laura Lee.

With so much stuff going on in the world today, I wanted to take a quote from the great Fela Kuti, when he said “Music is the weapon of the future”. Any one of these songs could be used as a weapon, as music can change the world. This mix was done all live, in one take, and any pop, crackle, or skip you hear is exactly how you’re going to hear it at any of my Friday nights at the Ace Hotel in NYC. Good Music brought to you by DJ Prestige and Flea Market Funk. Enjoy.

This week’s mix brings the bachelor pad tropical Funk of Les Baxter, some reworked De La Soul from the DeLaSoviet project with another De La sampled track by Taana Gardner, El Michels Affair adding a children’s vocal Wu Tang Clan cover plus a Bomb Squad remix of the Budos Band, West Coast Soul from A Combination of Sound and the Latin infused Hip Hop music of Ozomatli, the Visioneers payin’ tribute to Isaac Hayes, Willie Bobo and the Bo Gents doing their thang, Raw Dog’s own DJ Louis Slipperz from the UK (let’s not forget the great MC Maestro), the hilltop Hustlers outta Philly 3 x Dope, Harold Mabern doing his cover of the Jackson 5, plus Reggae styles of Faithless (yes I did it), King Yellowman, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and The Upsetters.

It’s also a little tribute to to a pair of my favorite designers Charles and Ray Eames, with a a molded plastic rocker on the cover. The furniture and music have so much original stylin’ in them (let’s not forget another Herb Lubalin tribute with the reworked fonts in the name) that this is my favorite mix of the series so far. Selected Cuts: The Ace Hotel Live Mix 5

I have been really into my design stuff lately, and well, my inspiration this week is drawn from Robert Brownjohn and of all things, a vitamin package. Super clean stuff, and I like the “selected” cuts label, so here goes. Always in awe of the stuff Dilla did, his lifting of a Stereolab sample for Busta Rhymes is genius, while some originals by the Los Angeles Negros, The Battered Ornaments, The Coasters, The JB’s, and Gary Wright have been sampled before, heavily and well, not so heavily. There is some Golden Age Hip Hop with Pete Rock and CL Smooth featuring Grand Puba (and using the Coasters sample) while Diamond and KRS-One meet and Da Bush Babees swing it, newer Hip Hop straight from Shaolin and Ghostface feat. Raekwon and Capadonna, some funky Reggae with Boris Gardiner, rockin’ steady with Delroy Wilson, and ecellent re-interpretation of Eddie Harris by DJ Nu-Mark, and some Rock with the Who. I mean if you can’t get down with “Emminence Front” think about it again. Shout out to Shut Skateboards vet Derek Rinaldi on that track. Always switching it up for you on these Ace mixes, it was done all live, one take, and is a good representation of what you’re gonna hear if you come out on Fridays at the Ace Hotel in NYC to hear me play.

Stereolab – Come and Play In the Milky Night
Busta Rhymes/ Jay Dee – Show Me What You Got
