More snow here in NYC this Monday, but we’re thinking of warmer places like Jamaica and Israel. A nice warm beach would do us all some good right about now. We’ve got a beautiful record this morning, coming from the old and new of Reggae. Today’s offering is a joint collaboration from one of Rocksteady’s best and the Israeli Roots Reggae band Zvuloon Dub System. Head Viceroy Wesley Tinglin wrote the lyrics over the band’s original riddim. The result? A beautiful Reggae record in the spirit of the original artists released on the Med.Tone label.
The Viceroys were champions of Rocksteady, and as well as recording for Coxsone Dodd, they have been associated with producers such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, Derrick Morgan, Winston Riley, and others. Zvuloon Dub System are an eight piece outfit from Israel comprised of some of the best underground musicians in the country. They record in the old style, all analog, and follow the traditions of Scratch and King Tubby among others. They’re not just about the music, but about preserving the rich, cultural heritage this music carries with it. A great collaboration, this seven inch is available right no. It’s always great when artists from the past link up with newer musicians who are carrying the torch on for the next generation and the music is actually good. Grab this double sider (B side is the Dub) for sure.
