Wayne Shorter featuring ft. Milton Nascimento – Ponta De Areia

8nufSummertime, and the digging’ is easy. As the Summer grows to an end, I thought I’d share one of the gems I picked up recently. We recently found a random flea market at a church. To call it a flea market was a bit too much. If the vendors were next to each other, it would have been more like a small yard sale. The usual stuff was present: junk, knick knacks, and more junk. Then I spotted it: a lone crate of records. Problem was, they were in the open, in the sun, and no cover. I bolted over with my son in tow as fast as could. I did not have high expectations. Let’s just say when I flipped through the records, my tone changed a bit. Mostly jazz records spattered with jazz/rock and fusion, I walked away with a dozen records for $10 and a turntable from another table for $5. Not bad for some random spot at a random town.

While most people may argue that Shorter’s career was going the opposite of good in the 1970’s, Native Dancer, released in 1974 is a definite killer record. Boasting the talent of Herbie Hancock, Brazilian legends Airto Moreira and Milton Nascimento, this jazz fusion Lp has a lot of Brazilian flavor throughout. In fact, it has been called one of his essential records. It may be late in his career as far as the Wayne Shorter of Blue Note and Prestige we know, but let’s not forget that the jazz world shunned Miles when he started to change as well. At the price of less than a candy bar, how could you pass up such music royalty with this record? I know we couldn’t. This had to be rescued and shared. Here’s “Ponta De Areia” to start your week off. Enjoy!
