Kaleta & Super Yamba Band – Mr. Diva b/w Hungry Man, Angry Man

We don’t know about you, but to be able to start our Monday off with a track like this is a tell tale sign that the week is going to be a pretty good one. Hitting hard with some African sounds, this forty five from Kaleta & Super Yamba Bandis one solid piece of dance floor fire. A true mover, the record itself had been released previously as a very limited seven inch and on a digital platform. On this record, Kaleta returns to the inspiration of his youth in Benin and together with the Super Yamba Band, they lay down some very raw, psychedelic afrofunk and soul sounds from the 1970’s in Africa. These very influences and subsequent playing would lead Kaleta to be an in demand player, touring the world with the best: Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and in more recent times, Ms. Lauryn Hill. This record hits hard two times, and was recorded live at Hive Mind Recordings in Brooklyn. It was produced by the most excellent Vince Chiarito, who has put his Midas touch on Charles Bradley (R.I.P.), as well as Ikebe Shakedown among others. Of course we leave it to Ubiquity Records to once again bring out the best in a player like Kaleta. This record is definitely a must for all who love the afrofunk sound, and who also like to get down. It’s is not hard to get down to. It’s all about the groove and this forty five has it. Not to mention it has been remastered for a more superior sound quality, what more could you ask for, Kaleta to play in you living room? That would be fine in our opinion. For now, listen to both sides of the record below:
