For those of you who have been following the career of Mr. Fantastic aka The Nostalgia King aka one Skeme Richards, you know his life is steeped DEEP in analog objects. Vinyl Records, toys, comics, magazines, and more, the man’s life work is about preserving the cool and also urging people to dig deeper, that’s why people are attracted to the moves he makes. That being said, he’s teamed up with Record Breakin’ Music for the latest edition of his Shifting Gears cassette series, this time it’s number three.
Peel the shrink, drop it in your deck, press play, then happy hunting as you dig for yours!
Like the previous two cassettes he dropped, the third volume is still analog only. There are no digital tracks online, and if you’re like us here at Flea Market Funk, we’re playing ours on a ’70s Panasonic hand held and it still sounds fantastic. The six-panel J card insert has artwork and layout from the one and only Mo Manley out of the Chi (Wax Poetics, Soul Summit, badass designer to boot!) and follows not only the tradition of his own mixtapes but the likes of Soulman, DJ Muro, DJ Shame, The Conmen (Supreme La Rock and Jake One) as well. Filled with vinyl-only goodies that are old and new, this one will have you revisiting again and again. And in Skeme Richards fashion, he pulls from some under the radar ish, so expect nothing less than a solid effort. Recorded directly to the four-track then mixed down to a master tape and dubbed like a gentleman, Richards encourages us to listen intently and “dig for yours”. No audio preview, you must respect the pedigree and cop the tape.
