I figured I’d get up a bit early today and try to get with my dealer since I missed him last week. I might have to get up a bit earlier. The spot is getting a little more crowded, and with this recent heat wave (compounded with the humidity), it makes it all that necessary to get your records and bust out. My regular guy had a good amount of stuff for me, but of course I have to make the rounds. I got a decent amount of mixed Funk and Soul 45s, plus a few Lps. King Bravo was out of Reggae this week, but Psych Dave had a some great Jazz and sleeper Funk Lp by Duke Williams and the Extremes on Capricorn. Funk Rock, but cool none the less. Stinkie Steve was flitting around getting loud talking about how he had a new records (obviously so I would be envious), but seriously, why should I be envious of a crazy man who lives in his car and, word has it, is on the lamb from the law for unpaid traffic violations? Let’s see, I get records for fun. He lives in his car, sells records and whatever any other shady operations he has going on, he’s been kicked out of a few East Coast flea markets, and this guy thinks I am losing sleep over not getting his records. It’s great how the mind of a borderline insane person goes. Like I have said before, it’s the flea market, I’m buying someone else’s junk, and I really try not to get too stressed over it. I always end up getting good finds, so in my eyes, I always win.
I did see the vendor I fondly refer to as “The Wine Guy”. This was the dude who had a bunch of records in his molester custom van (pictured below) that I crawled into, and all the while he’s saying: “Don’t spill my wine!”. His wine was professionally kept in a round Igloo cooler, complete with spigot. I forgot to mention it was 8:30 AM. This reminds me of the time I shared a Coors Light nip with a seller at the Englishtown Auction (when it was in it’s vinyl hey day). It was hot, before noon, and the guy had Funk. I almost felt bad for the guy, like he was some lonely music guy, so while I was digging, I partook in an ice cold “road soda” and some conversation. Good times I tell you.

No records for me this week, just his wine and a sombrero.
So for now, I’m gonna have a listen to the treats I dug up. Here’s a list:

whats up prestige….just lettin you know i’m on the check in for a slight dose of f.m.f. did you dig sweetnighter? hope so. i’m gonna stack together the best 45’s possible for you next week. i’ll do my best to weed out the general b.s. and bring as many bangers as possible………the rest of today went o.k. at the spot. right as i was about to leave i noticed a table with 45s under a t-shirt so they wouldnt melt…..or sell for that matter. heres the small haul from that dude…..[mandrill-mango meat/polydor john roberts-sophisticated funk/duke fat man-bohannon/dakar jack mcduff-the prophet/cadet chris cross-jimmy mcgriff/solid state ] small in quantity but plenty-o-funk. hit me on the reply…..paul
Great Brenda & the Tabulations come up!
Brenton Wood is always a good find, too.
These stories of the borderline insane are just as good as hearing about your actual finds, haha.
Peace.
Some great finds there. I especially love the Wee Willie Mason disc. Paul, that John Roberts 45 is a favorite.
Oh, by the way, love the Fisher-Price record player. I see those quite a bit but not the ones that operate on batteries, let alone that work really well.
paul: good look on the 45s. i actually bought the same barbara george from mike today too. as far as the fisher price goes, man, i had to get my father in law that’s like the NJ version of magyver to help me rebuild it. it’s old but modified. we put a headphone jack in it and also resoldered some connections. my next step is to actually have a better speaker. these are def hard to come by, if you see one, pick them up. i got mine on e bay in the late 90’s for like 20 bucks. i feel another Soul Mix coming up….
I’ve got two of the Duke Williams and the Extremes LPs, the “Monkey In a Silk Suit” and “Fantastic Fedora?” Has anyone transferred these to MP3?
I saw them as an opening act for someone – it may have been Foghat, way back when.
Just making the rounds today in prep for the next post. I braved the elements yesterday myself and spent a small fortune on a disc from Miss Linda Mackey. The pic sleeve was worth the price of admission, but the 45 inside… wow!
I really have to break down and get a portable. I’m spoiled by the Guru since he keeps a turntable on hand for auditioning, hitting the fire hall is a different story altogether. Keep diggin as always.
Peace and blessings.
P.S. I’m looking forward to your guest mix for DJ Blueprint. I just know it’s gonna burn my fingers, heat and all 😉
excellent vincent. i got a lot of great sides this weekend, and a trade with DJ Bluewater yielded these records:
joe (youngblood) cobb – it’s l.b. time/ exSPECTmore
johnny talbot – pickin’ cotton/ jasman
it’s also got us together for a HEAVY mix collaboration, which i will be dropping this week hopefully. the blueprint record mix was fun. get that portable!
yo brother!
Nice scores!
i see thing have not chnaged much over at the spot! haha!
how’s the old man doing?
I pulled a big haul this weekend! too many to even list, and i have not gone through the whole box yet!
the old man is doing great. he was digging with me super early, and we were bullshitting while digging. he’s the best there is over there man. lots of great stories too from sat. i won’t write about them until something comes out of it. what did you score this week, i’m interested!
i too have seen duke williams & the extremes open for muddy waters in utica ny circa 1973! stinky steve has also been banned for the lancaster pa record shows for lunatic-like behaviors.sort of miss him as he always had some killer lps.he was infamous for saying “all records are $2 or $3. then wehen you had your selections in hand we would say “oh, i have to get $10 fior this and i have $25 in this one already”. good times, good times!
the plot thickens with stinkie steve man. i mean he has really great records, but has pulled a boatload of shady stuff this past summer and i think it might be catching up to him. we’ll see. how’s that lancaster market?
I’ll get a partial list tonight when i get home from worktonight, but man i have so much stuff to go through it aint even funny…
I forgot to tell you that B.B. King was AMAZING!
At 81 that dude still can play a mean guitar.
His tone was gritty, rough and full of passion & sustain and he played flawlessly. Plus he told funny and insightful stories throughout the night and his voice was on point.
Overall a very killer evening even if Etta James has to bail out due to medical complications.
Oh yeah and Al Green sang his B@LLS OFF TOO!!!
A great night of soul & blues….
lancaster is pretty tired.it seems like you look more for 45s and this is an lp market place. you spoke of record ray before and at times he will bring in a load of 45s.i have been attending for 25+ years and it seldoms turns up a classic. i do much better on the hunt at yard sales, flea markets and thrift store.
