Sometimes you take chances and you get burned. Other times you take a chances and they pay off. Such was the case on Saturday morning. Let’s rewind to Friday night, where I was up way too late checking out Scott H. Biram, the Dirty One man Blues Band from Hell (and Austin TX). Scott is a great musician who mixes Blues, Country, Field Hollers, Yodeling, and Death Metal into an amazing show. The guy was hit bit an 18 wheeler, broke every damn bone in his body, and still performs. He’s an amazing performer who will throw in some Zepplin in the middle of a Muddy Waters tune or make you laugh your ass off from stories about his life in between tunes. His original stuff is prety damn good too. At any rate Scott kept me up too late, and I overslept by about an hour. I rushed to my spot and saw all the usual suspects (minus Stinkie Steve). Insert some Dragnet music, rumor has it his escapades may have caught up to him. Hmmmmm. Anyway, I go to my guy, he’s got some great 45sfor me. I’m walking away, and I think, let me check this one spot. There is a huge detergent box full of 45s. Now I do not have time to look through the whole thing, but I see some great labels on top. I had to meet my wife, so I figured, let me take a chance. The guy says it’s only a twenty spot. I buy the whole thing for $20, and get going. Out of the 100+ records in this box, something has to be worth it. The whole ride home I’m pulling a few things out. There are no sleeves, but some look like they can be cleaned up, actually most of them do. When I get home quickly, I start pulling records out. I will not list the entire contents from this box (but I will list my haul from my guy), but the detergent box paid off. It yielded me a copy of Mickey and the Soul Generation’s “Iron Leg”, a pretty piece of Texas Funk. It’s kind of beat up, but still plays. Now I know there are some other gems in there, but that’s all I care about for now.

Keep Diggin’! It pays off.
Was a crate digger for mega years. Could relate to this posting. Taking chances is part of digging for records/beats.
Adds to the fun of it all… WAIT!!! … that’s not 100% because when you’re short of money & have to leave a stack behind you stay thinking about it until you go back to claim those (carefully hidden) records. That’s the bad part (LOL).
BTW, Nice batch of 45rpms there.
For anybody in cyber-reality that could ride with the idea that “soulful” and “funky” could be viewed as elements intrinsically relative to one’s lifestyle, check out the SOULFUNKLIFESTYLES blog at http://SoulFunkLifestyle.blogspot.com
yo…that 45 dude was back this morning and i really racked up big time. he had to have at least twice as many boxes as yesterday. try to be at the spot a little before 6 next sat cause he said he got just as many fresh unpicked boxes coming…..then the same for next sunday! this dude was not exaggerating abut having thosands….i probably picked thru damn near close to 8000 of them just this morning,no lie. and the prices??? i stepped of with two normal size 45 cases, that he provided free of charge, for less than 40 bucks.make it there sat. early. heres some of the haul… nu-sound express/aint it good enough……. jack daugherty/feel so good…….the delegates/funky butt…….ripple/willie pass the water…….les crane/a diffrent drummer…..pigmeat markham/sock it to em judge…..etc etc etc. saturday at 6, shit is on. hit me back.
yo i need that nu sound express…..i’ll trade you. lemme know.
we can probably work that out depending on the trade. you have alot of stuff im not familiar with so a list might not help me too much. if this isnt a hassle for you, next week you could bring a stack of stuff youre willing swap and ill decide then. if that doesnt work for you i can just e mail you my number and we’ll figure something out. although i dont wanna make any promises right away, im sure we’ll be able to work something out.
Never met you in person. Think you got me confused with somebody else (LOL).
Still good to her you’re enjoyin’ that stash of records & the prospect of gettin’ more. Enjoy.
Peace.
the trade comment was meant for paul SFL, but it is good to meet you, even if it’s just on the web. thanks for checking out the site.
Funnily enough, I saw stinky steve at a flea market over here in bucks county at about 1 in the afternoon. He was purchasing records that had been sitting out in the sun all morning and telling some dude with a few crates of records that he sold his metallica records too cheaply……
HA! he must be laying low. word has it he’s on the lamb. that guy is a complete trip. he once tried to sell me a warped, unplayable chris clark 45 on VIP. and i quote: “you can fix it, you can fix it, $12 dollars!”
Looks like “the spot” still has something to offer even with all these new “record guys” running around trying to make a buck off of something that should be fun and for pleasure…
I remember when there were only a handful of cats digging and hunting out there and now it seems every tom, dick & harry is running around with vinyl.
Kinda bums me out a bit but I’m glad for your good fortune, if a little bit jealous… heh…
I just can’t get out there anymore with my situation man…
road trip for sure man.
Cheers!
DD
South Side Coalition! They have another gem, “The Power Play” also on Brown Dog Records… Dusty Groove has it in stock from time to time, I would love to get more material from those guys, they’re funky ass hell… I drop that gem quite a bit at the soul monthly I DJ at in Long Beach, CA – The Good Foot… Sweet find!
I’m always turning up some SSC sides. At first it was always “I’m Watching You” on Wand, but now the Brown Dog sides seem to be coming out of the woodwork.
