Got My Rhythm Back, and Avoided A Riot

Cha Cha

It’s always nice to take a week off from my usual spot. It just so happened that I was fortunate to get some other digging in in PA, but coming back to the spot always gives me a good feeling. It gives me a good feeling no matter if there are records or not. Today there were a few records to be had (and a complete absence of many of the usual suspects), but almost a riot. I swung around my usual route, and finding no one on record row I gravitated to the first record stand (naturally). My guy was there with a batch of 45s in hand, Eggbeard was hovering over the crap Lps, and a few of the other older (and really much cooler) record guys were busting on each other. Usually when my guy gets to a table first, he finds all the stuff I like (and then sells them to me, that’s just how it works), but today I managed to find a few 45s he let slip by. While this first of the morning digging was going on, I hear some yelling, followed by some screaming. Now, I’m not sure if all of you are familiar with the flea market seller stuff, but here is my understanding of it. People pay by the month or day, and your spot is reserved. Some people have had the same spot for years. If you don’t have a reservation, you have to wait until 7:30 to take an open table. Well, a very large woman had 6 tables reserved, and they were all taken. Here’s where the fun starts. The people won’t move, she’s got steam coming out of her ears, and then she threatens to “Clear off her whole table”. Her being a woman who had the irate lady’s table, and just wouldn’t budge. At this point men were walking away. I was even moving down just in case merchandise started flying. You never know when a samurai sword or chainsaw will come flying off the table. It could have been a full fledged riot in September. It was quite comical, and at that point I realized why I love the flea markets (besides the vinyl)……..the people. The Meatball was walking around, and tried to sell me some 45, but I wasn’t really interested (of course he probably wanted $50 for a scratched, rinked, warped side). In and out in about 2 hours, I didn’t get much, but here’s the haul:

Like I said, not a huge haul, but some decent pieces. The Family 45 on North Bay is a great Sly Stone cover, and all in all I’m happy. We’ll see how the record show goes tomorrow. Pictures and a full report will follow of course. I’m also almost done with a Jazz mix, called The Real Roast: Soulful Jazz for Sunday Mornings, which I’m pretty excited to drop. Some of you Jazz heads might recognize the cover design’s inspiration. I’m shooting for Monday with that. Look for me tonight on Fox Soccer Channel as I’ll be back in the Supporters section of the NY Red Bulls (behind the goal), as they look to clinch a playoff spot tonight against Real Salt Lake. Also, let’s hope for a Liverpool win today as well. Hope you enjoyed the banter, and a few photos of today. Keep Diggin’!

This guy had no records, but he did have a creepy ass stuffed squirrel.

PS: Here’s a draft for the November 23rd Asbury Park 45 Sessions Flyer. I’m adding guest selectors as I type this:
