Hazlet Record Show 09.30.07

Hazlet Scores

Before I get into the record show details, I want to shout out DJ Andy Smith who hit me up and let me know he’s going to be here in the States doing a few dates. He’ll be at the Ben Sherman Store in Boston, MA on Oct. 19th, and APT in the West Village of NYC on the 20th alongside Chairman Mao, David Griffiths, Jared Boxx, and Mr. Fine Wine. This will be an all 45 show, and should not be missed. I will be in attendance for sure. Andy Smith is not only a great DJ, but his superior digging skills show in his Document Mix series. He’s able to cross genres with ease, and hopefully I’ll be able to get him at the 45 Sessions some time in the future.

Since I did so well last time, and since the show is about 30 minutes closer to my house, I was pretty excited to hit up this record show. It’s not the best, but I seem to always find stuff. When the show was in Edison at the Raritan Center, I was able to score great Jazz, Reggae, and some clean Funk and Soul. The inaugural show at the Holiday Inn was pretty decent. Although there was a monsoon out, I got away with about 60+ 45s and the crowd was ok. This time, Funky 16 Corners and I opted for the super early admission ($20), and met DJ Prime and Jersey’s best kept beat maker Skills early to beat the crowds. Record shows are honestly usually really beat for the most part (exception is FMU), but hate to spend a mint on records, paying dealer prices for shit I can dig up myself with a little hard work, and for a fraction of the price. There were a lot of the usual spot suspects, as well as the record dealers that are always lingering around the Tri-State and East Coast shows. From Allentown to Asbury Park, they were all representing.

I was able to dig up some cool stuff, and left pretty happy. Here are the scores, most (if not all) will be added to the review que for your listening pleasure (in blog or mix post) in the near future. It was all about 45s today (isn’t it always?), and I’m happy I got out.

  1. ahhh that was the soulful strings version of burning spear not the s.o.u.l. version. still a nice score for the price. Wish I had more time to dig. I had to go to work like Kool Moe Dee. At least the Phillies won. keep diggin

  2. yeah it was an ok show. 2 copies of this record: Bobo Mr. Soul – H.L.I.C./ Ovide were a great score for $10. the truman thomas on veep was a good come up as well. i like the early admission. what was up with that english cat with the Duffer hoody? dude was on our shit like what. everywhere i turned around, he was there. it looks like the end of an era for the stinkie one. he was topic of conversation at many tables. all in all, good scores for the asbury 45 sessions team.

  3. Looks like some really good stuff there. The 7-Eleven disc is one that I keep hoping to run across for cheap. They usually go for around $20 on eBay but patience is the word. Love that Tender Joe Richardson record. Both sides of it are good.

  4. yeah being a fan of the brainfreeze, i had to pick it up. prime got one at our spot for a fucking dollar last year, so i’ll take it for $5 and a late pass. the our ladies of soul is an interesting one. super sweet girl group soul. not a bad fetching for a sunday morning.

  5. yo…grant green “alive” sealed for $6. still tryin to figure that out. the final comedown price made sense (sort of). all in all good deals. i’m more than happy with the haul. check you next week w/ some hip-hop peace

  6. the alive record is a great one. i dig the cover. grant all pimped out, and it was recorded in NEWARK. those were the days man. the final comedown was a good price. you’re not gonna see it for under that price. if you do, it’s advisable to pick it up. i know there’s a reissh at turntable lab, but either way, nice look.

  7. yeah the newark shit bugged me out. that plus a kool and the gang b-side cover plus a quest samp….heavenly. i see you got mongo’s cloud 9. if you dont have “stone soul” get it. i think meatball has one and i’m sure he didn’t sell it. i grabbed a “mongo 70” yesterday i think from e.b.’s table. great stuff

  8. yeah from that italian dude.. i bought a bunch of shit that day, but have to admit that haul was trashed bad. there was even a roy ayers “he’s coming” i dont even bother playing. i remember trying to call steve over to the stash and he lost out arguing with bravo over some calypso shit. that dude is nuts…..check you saturday.

  9. love that Dynatones, found a beat one this past weekend. There are quite a few cool HBR garage sides, Five Americans, etc.
