To start off the Monday, I wanted to give a shout out to Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), rapper, actor, and ground breaking artist. Bey volunteered to be filmed getting force fed in the same manner as over 100 Guantánamo Bay prisoners who are on hunger strike. This clip is a bit distressing to say the least. The short, four miunute clip based on a leaked document outlining the military procedures for force feeding prisoners was directed by bafta award winning director Asif Kapadia in connection with the non profit organization Reprieve and is a short glimpse at the over two hour, twice a day ordeal. We’re all human here, and this film definitely raises some questions about what is right and what is wrong. Whether you agree with the procedure or not, it’s a glimpse of what really goes on in the real world. Most people turn a blind eye to what is happening right before them, and it’s great to see a person like Bey for using his platform to get this message out to the masses.
