Substantial – Follow The Master b/w Cool Mornings

Origu Substantial 45Good record labels have a knack for putting out good records. We’ve been on the Our Records Label train for some time, and when they have something new and interesting, we are on it. Enter Origu, an off shoot label from Our Label records putting out original hip hop 45s from US emcees. For their debut 45, they teamed up with Maryland spitter Substantial and a feel good side “Follow The Master”. Produced by The Other Guys, this little record with the big hole reminisces of a fun time in hip hop. A smooth flow and dope production (not to mention some sick producing and sample selection) make this the go to hip hop 45 of the moment. Substantial has been making quality records for close to 15 years, and this record is a great example of what he can do if you’re not familiar. With a new full length record ready for 2016, this is just a taste, so get ready. The flip, “Cool Mornings” is a mellow trip with the top down, jazzy samples and digable flow featuring vocals of Doborah Bond. It’s cool like that and substantial proves that he can smooth it out on the mellow tip as well. We are down with the flute sample as well, especially that little drop at the end. An exclamation point to an already good record. As debuts go, we say that Origu is on to something. If hip hop on 45 is your thing, then Gu has a label that will go well next to some of the other boutique, original hip hop 45s out there. Substantial is not just an emcees name, it’s also what kind of releases this label gives us. Stay tuned for more from Origu. Check out both sides of the record below.
