When people talk about influences, the name Curtis Mayfield inevitably comes up. Different genres, different singers, and different players all come together to acknowledge Mayfield as one of their favorites. It’s just fitting that Pat Van Dyke aka PVD, one of New Jersey’s best bandleaders chose to take on one of the Kings of Soul groovers. With the lovely vocals of Melinda Camille, the band: David Stolarz(Organ), Joey Johnson (Tenor Sax), Richard Polatchek (Trumpet), and of course Pat Van Dyke (Drums / Drum programming, Bass, Guitar, Percussion, Handclaps) do this tune justice. Staying soulful and updating this classic on their own terms, this is definitely one of our favorite cover tunes at the moment. Another feather in the cap of PVD, who goes diverse and deep whether it’s jazz, funk, soul, hip hop or bossa nova. Keep an eye out for more exciting projects from this talented musician and band leader. For now, everybody clap your hands and give yourself a chance with this winner.
