Delia Gartrell – Fight Fire With Fire from the Right-On 45
Well here we are midweek, and two days away from the biggest Asbury Park 45 Sessions to date. It’s going to be a huge night for the 45 crew here at Asbury Lanes. This will be our first of hopefully many live broadcasts and archives of the DJ sets courtesy of Jam Now. With the addition of two new members of the family: The Soul Chef and DJ Save1, it’s a guaranteed good time. I’ve also got some other special treats in store, so if you can make it, please be our guest. Today’s post is going to be a bit short on info, but long on the Funky Soul. Coming straight out of Hotlanta, let’s get into this side by Delia Gartrell on Right-On Records, with “Fight Fire With Fire”. I have to thank Psych Dave and Jack the Ripper for turning me on to this side, I definitely appreciate it brothers.
This is another one of those sides that I don’t know much about, but really dig. I featured this on my guest mix I did for Souled On Music a few weeks back. This side is out of New York’s Right On Records, but packs a Southern Soul punch. It was produced by Hannibal, who Delia was married to. Definitely a good move on her part, as the Mighty one was instrumental in her career as an artist. Besides singing, she was featured as a one of the back up singers for Hannibal, however this is the first of a few sides she would record. Gartrell went on to put out records for Maverick (under the monicker Dee Dee Gartrell), Bahith, Demin-Kalo, and Aware. It’s a great example of some female Funky Soul, complete with some fuzzy guitar and great drums.I mean seriously, how could she go wrong with Hannibal in her corner? Enjoy this nugget, and I will back back twice more this week with more info on the Asbury Park 45 Sessions and details on the night. Keep Diggin’!
Over 100 DL’s and not a single comment? Thanks, this is a real nice one that I haven’t heard before.
