The Cactus Channel – The Dap

Since this weekend was about Record Store Day, which I will comment on a bit later, I also threw up a post about Shaolin Jazz, which featured the acapella of Wu Tang and Wu Tang family songs over Jazz breaks. A great take on some classics. Well done Gerald Watson and DJ 2 Tone-Jones. Since we all know that Wu Tang is for the children, I decided to showcase some children who are into Funk and Soul. How about a Monday morning full of Funk with The Cactus Channel and “The Dap” from Hope Street Recordings?

Comin’ straight out of Melbourne, crazy 10 piece outfit called Cactus Channel….ok, I always take the chance to use an NWA intro, but let’s get serious for a moment. This band is serious. A 10 piece teen band from Down Under doing live Funk? You bet they are, and not just any Funk. The A-Side is their original single “Pepper Snake”, and these Australian funksters know how to move it and groove it, no questions asked. For the B-Side however, these kids know their Funk history, and have chosen a cover of the New Orleans classic “The Dap” by Porgy Jones. Fortunately for us, they do it and do it well. This tune is tight and right on point. With an average age of seventeen, The Cactus Channel have been tearing up Funk breaks and originals out of the halls of Princes Hill High School. This is no Pro Tools outfit, they record all their stuff straight to analog tape! With a sound way beyond their years, the Cactus Channel has tapped into something that most teenagers don’t have a taste for, the sound of vintage Funk and Soul. Make no mistake, this is no polished sound of the Jackson 5, but the raw, funky sound of the bands emulating James Brown through out the United States in the early 70’s. The sound I like here over at Flea Market Funk. I commend these teens and the people at Hope Recordings for keeping the real sound of music alive in 2011. This will be getting major spins out for sure. Looking forward to the next CC 45 to arrive in the mail. Until then, keep diggin’!
