Our favorite Brooklyn duo is at it again. You might remember the write up we did on The Stuyvesants release “Stoops, Parks and Rooftops” a few months back. This is the kind of releases we dig over here at FMF. Not only is the music spot on, but the design is on point as well. Designer Darien Victor Birks (Flwpt) and producer Allan Cole (Algorythm) make beautiful music together. The kind you may have heard in Brooklyn in the 70’s. They do it and do it well (like LL) and these two releases, after the unexpected success and positive feedback from their first release Brooklyn’s Finest, follow up nicely and look to be just as successful.
“ The two wanted to work together on a project where they could incorporate several of their talents, related to music and design. They wanted to do this under a moniker that would pay homage to the ’70s. The collaboration allowed them to do four major things, design, beat dig, produce amazing music, and simply have fun ”
You may notice, that aurally, the music is a bit different than Brooklyn’s Finest, released only five short months ago, but packs a soulful punch that’s both effective and enjoyable. Sweet soul, organ riffs, falsetto screams, and good lovin’ dominate the 20 track first volume as you take a stroll back in time in your mind. The music reminds you of artists like Barbara Acklin and Brenda and the Tabulations with Jay Dee producing them. The beats are solid, tight, and in the groove. Volume Two is bringing you back with a Persuaders kinda vibe, your velvet robe on loose, a Blue Nun bottle open, the fire burning, your girl looking fine, the hi-fi just right, but this time, the wine doesn’t just go well with the chicken, it’s the Stuyvesants that go well with everything. If there is such a thing as the sophomore slump, than The Stuyvesants plow right through it like a hot knife through butter. You will be wanting more from this Bed-Stuy duo, and at the rate they are putting releases out, it’s most likely in the works. The Stuyvesants, spreading love, because you know, it’s the Brooklyn way.
