It’s been a while since I put something together here on FMF, so with the redesign of the site I wanted to showcase a few records I have been into lately. I’ve been doing so many mixes for others lately, Funky 16 Corners, Dust & Grooves, Jim Golden Studio, and a guest Mix for DJ Pari’s podcast coming up in the near future, that I wanted to put something up for the readers on this site. All these record were dug up in the field and with the exception of the Lou Donaldson joint were all a buck or two. Bumpin’ is a Funk, Soul, and Jazz excursion that loosely borrows some cover design from Freddie Hubbard’s Here To Stay release.
There are a variety of great artists on this mix. Freddie Robinson, once billed as “one of the new breed of Jazz Rock guitarists” covers a Curtis Mayfield penned track while Merry Clayton puts her own spin on Neil Young. The Eddie Harris track on this mix was re-worked by DJ Nu-Mark, and when you listen to the original, you can hear why. Bernard Purdie’s short lived label called Encounter put out the band East Coast (with vocalist Gwen Guthrie), while People Under the Stairs sampled Gabor Szabo & the California Dreamers original track on Impulse!. The private press Soul record put out by the US Navy (used for “recruiting purposes”, it’s in the liner notes I can’t make this shit up) performed by the US Navy Salvation Army Band shouts out Washington, DC, while the East Harlem Bus Stop gets on down. A track from the Serpico soundtrack is up against a sweet keyboard cover of Aretha Franklin by Dick Hyman and Sweet Lou Donaldson’s JB cover. Finally we finish the mix off with some Nashville Gospel from The Speight Sisters, a family that sings, stays, and prays together. I think all of these sides are dy-no-mite and out of site, I’m hoping you will too.
Clocking in somewhere around 40 minutes or so, the mix is all original vinyl, all live, and done in one take. Thanks for the support here at FMF, and this mix is a small sample of what’s to come. Enjoy!
