We all know how much I love 45s here at FMF, and when a band like Renegades of Jazz decides to explore the depths of Latin music and release it on a 45, it’s something to talk about. Mankoora is Loopez (piano and organ), Alexander “Newton” Bednasch (bass and guitar), and David Hanke (production). Their first 7″ out on Hiperbole Records from Germany is a scorcher. The A side, “El Loco” is a breakbeat filled, bass line driven, funky organ swinging, horn section hitting assault on the ears. This uptempo Latin groove will soon be filling dance floors at a funky night near you. The flip side, “Boogaloo Tormenta, is billed strictly for the dancers. With a great piano hook and trumpet throughout, watch out for the massive drum break in the middle. This 45 is exactly what you need to kick off your weekend.
Already picked up by the likes of Craig Charles from BBC6 and Jelly Jazz’s Pete Isaac, this 7” looks to be gaining momentum and getting support from the right people from the get go. If this is the first release from Mankoora, I’m already anticipating the next record. Stash this in your bag to get the crowd jumping.
