Welcome to Wednesday, where this scorcher of a jazz seven inch might fly right under your radar had you not browsed our little corner of the musical goodness this morning. Finland, where the funk is funkier and the jazz is well, funkier too, is the home of jazz legend Olli Ahvenlahti, who lights it up on this 45 something lovely. Olli let’s the groove fly on “Minor Minor” from the upcoming LP Thinking, Whistling on We Jazz. If you close your eyes it’s not 2018 in Finland, it’s 1967 and you’re in Newark, NJ at a jazz club listening to this music take yoir mind away. The sound and groove is so good, we had to pick the needle up again. With players such as Ahvenlahti himself on piano, Jussi Kannaste on tenor sax, Antti Lötjönen on bass, and Jaska Lukkarinen on drums, this side is a winner. But flip the thing over and you’ve got a remake by the Stance Brothers aka drummer/ producer Teddy Rok, who absolutely slays his version as well. It’s the first music in ten years from The Stance Brothers and it’s an absolute killer. This is a record that makes us really glad we write about music. An absolute solid record through and through.
