Feeling This Friday: Tawiah – Recreate

Friday comes so fast lately, here’s an artist we are definitely feeling. The latest signing to the First Word label, UK artist Tawiah, is no stranger to the music biz. Having previously released two Eps, a mixtape, and collaborations with everyone from Cee-Lo to Mark Ronson, Eric Lau to Blood Orange and beyond, this alt-soul innovator has been championed by Gilles Peterson, The Guardian, and Zane Lowe among others. First Word are happy to get the word out on her debut album on the label. With contributions from Sharlene Hector, Vula Malinga, Ladonna Young, Ade Omotayo and Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne, the record is co-produced by Sam Beste (Hejira), and features string arrangements from none other than Miguel Atwood-Fergueson. “Recreate” is taken from the full length Starts Again , a full exploration into the life and her identity as a queer woman of color, expressing all she has to give raw and uncut from her Pentecostal upbringing,

the process of creating this record independently has taken years!! From self-produced demos to live recording sessions with my good friends; Blue May, Sam Beste, Alex Reeve, Alex Bonfanti, Nathan Allen and Lewis Wright. Sam and I then had two years of long joyful studio sessions working on the post production. With no external deadlines or briefs we had the freedom to create whatever came. It was a privilege to collaborate in this way

“Recreate” is a beautiful and soulful track that brings us some low key drums, airy synths and with Tawiah’s knockout vocals throughout (the vocal part over the piano part at 1:23 are so dreamy and on point) make us yearning for more of this super talented artist. It’s been a full decade since her first Ep, so if you weren’t aware of her music, you’ve got time to start again yourself, revisit the back catalog and move forward towards new musical horizons together. Looking forward to hearing much more of Tawiah soon. Starts Again is slated for a release on October 18th via First Word Records. It will be available on vinyl, digital, CD and limited cassette.
