It’s always exciting when there is a new release from MonDieu Music and DJ Preservation. For those not in the know, Preservation’s CV runs deep. In the game 20+ years, he’s the tour DJ for Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) but is also very much a producer. His production is Grammy-nominated and includes Bey, RZA, GZA, Raekwon, U-God, Sean Price, Roc Marciano, Lord Jamar, Ed O.G., KRS-One, Jean Grae, Aesop Rock, Chris Dave, K’naan, Jim Jarmusch, Sonic Sum, Ka, and Mach-Hommy among others. This latest effort was created while living and creating in Hong Kong for three years. “Gully / Pollen” features Jeremiah Jae / Coastal Lines and is an atmospheric slice of low tempo hits that weave in and out of slow-burning beats, wave sounds, and Hong kong feels. What we really like about Preservation is that honestly, he really doesn’t give a f@ck and just makes bangers. Make no mistake, this is a banger, but not in the sense of tearing the club down. Strip each part away and really listen closely. These two tracks are perfect for that smoked out walk with headphones on. He’s put in elements of the Honk Kong world around him: the birds in the harbor, instrumentation from the culture, temple sounds, and an eerie feeling of someone watching you even in the stillness of the night as the track plays on. The added flavor from rapper Jerimiah Jae is a treat. Preservation gets the job done only as he knows how on this effort: thoroughly and efficiently. This track is one we have had on repeat since it was released, and we look forward to more of this as it comes. You should too. Check out the track below and purchase it from Preservation’s bandcamp after the stream.
