It feels so good to be back in the saddle again here at FMF. Thanks to everyone for all the well wishes, support and shout outs for the new look and feel of FleaMarket Funk. I still have some tweaks to work on, but I’m feeling this new layout. If there is anything you want to suggest, a feature, etc., let me know, I’ll do my best to accommodate. Now, I said I had some goodies piled up, and I have been waiting to post all of these records send over by Colemine Records head honcho Terry Cole. I wanted this to be the first thing I posted on the new and improved site. I love the fact that there are artists, whether it be here, the UK, Finland, Australia, Spain and beyond that play music the way that it should be played and recorded: Real and Raw. I’m going to file this 7″ under that category, so let’s get into The Jive Turkeys and “Straight Fire” on Colemine Records.
The Jive Turkeys are comprised of Matt Amburgy on Organ, Andrew DeRoberts on guitar, Rob Houk on drums, and the big boss Terry Cole on bass pulling a Gabe Roth Midwest style. Hailing from Middleton, OH, this quartet, simply, how you say SMOKES on this track. Great organ action and jangly ass guitar, plus Cole lays down some tight bass. The drums hit hard, but I would have liked to have them hit harder. This is not a negative people, I just like that heavy drum. Personal preference, maybe some Soul Tornado style drums? This definitely does not sound like music made in 2010. It has early 70’s written all over it, Miller High Life pony bottles, leather jackets and tight big collared shirts all while shooting some pool for money listening to old King 45’s in a jukebox of some dark bar. This record could easily have been right next to any of those releases. It’s a label like Colemine, the dedication of a cat like Terry Cole, and the willingness of this quartet to carry on the tradition of making and recording music the way it used to be done: Real and Raw. Kudos to the Colemine crew and the Jive Turkeys for putting out some straight heat from the Midwest. This is definitely going to go on the newest FMF mix I put out. Make sure you contact Terry and get some of these releases before they are all gone. “The funk is here to stay” the Jive Turkeys scream, and by George I think they’re right. Keep Diggin’!
nice re-start homey! killer keys and vibe!
