Always on the cutting edge, always doing it their own way and at their own pace, Daptone Records of course is at it again. No stranger to the cover song game, interpreting everything from American standards (“This Land is Your Land”) to Kenny Rogers and the First Edition (“I Just Dropped In To see What Condition My Condition Was In”) to this very tune, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings have always kept things fresh. I have been championing this band since I was sent promos over ten years ago, and they show no signs of ever stopping. Their roster is tight, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are taking over the world. Now they will be opening up for the one and only Prince himself at Madison Square Garden on 01.18.11.
I know this has been floating around for a while, but I just can’t get this thing out of my mind. A soulful version of “Take Me With U”, and who better to cover it than SJ&TDK’s? Beside Sharon’s soulful wailing, the horn stabs, the guitar riff after “take me with youuuuuu”, there is one spot about 1:53 where all instruments cut out except the drums, and Sharon says “in your aaarms”….while a distinctive Daptone drum beat is played. This part makes it even sweeter for me. I say well done on this cover, and please keep the unique versions coming Daptone.
I don’t care where we go, I don’t care what we do pretty baby, but take the Dap Kings with you! You won’t be sorry.
