Raekwon The Purple Tape Box Set

Now yo yo, whattup yo, time is runnin out
It’s for real though, let’s connect politic – ditto
We could trade places, get lifted in the staircases
Word up, peace incarcerated scarfaces…….

From the giddy up the infamous Purple Tape aka Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, the third solo Wu full length was embraced by a cross section of the Hip Hop audience. Skateboard videos to moms in lowered MPV’s to Wall Street traders after hours were all buying what Raekwon was selling off of his solo debut. The distinctive all purple cassette (colored that way to stand out like product on the street knowhutimean?) is an all time classic. Tributes in the form of tees, stickers, posters and then some have used the highly recognizable purple cassette imagery to pay tribute to this solo Wu-Tang clan member record and street movie soundtrack. In what has been called the “most adventurous release” in Get On Down’s Master series, The Purple Tape Box Set is like no other. Here are the details:

-The set, which weighs 4 pounds, is housed in a premium, glass-top, “piano lacquer,” 4-inch-tall black display case with gold-colored hardware, embossed white-on-black Raekwon logo and “The Purple Tape” placard on front

-Cassette only: actual Purple Tape (with full audio from original album), with multi-panel “J-card” fold-out featuring original cassette artwork

-32-page, hard-cover liner notes book, including text by Brian Coleman (featuring an in-depth interview with and track-by-track reminisces by Raekwon); artwork from original Only Built 4 Cuban Linx album; and reprinted graphics from original Loud/RCA promotional singles

-Premium, glossy 24” x 24” promotional poster (from original Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 1995 Loud/RCA campaign)

-Only Built 4 Cuban Linx sticker

-Limited edition: only 1,000 copies worldwide

“ A lot of rappers wasn’t being creative [at that time] and we came with a potion that just shocked the game. We introduced shoes, we brought about different names and aliases. That record inspired maybe 95% of the game’s lyrics [afterwards], and integrity on just making music, period. People from our era know how real it is. It’s timeless. ”- Raekwon

Released September 17th, this very special set is available at Get On Down. A instant Hip Hop classic, with 5 singles: “Heaven & Hell,” “Glaciers of Ice”, “Criminology,” “Ice Cream / Incarcerated Scarfaces” and “Rainy Dayz”, this record went gold in 2 months. The Purple Tape is undisputed 17 years later and this release resonates with the old heads just as it does with the new jacks discovering the Golden Age and Hip Hop in its finest moments. Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of Hip Hop history, stored safely and protected in a special case. When this set is sold out, there will be no more, so all you Hip Hop collectors this one is for you. One of the best boutique reissues of the year, The Purple Tape Box Set keeps it gully. So break out that Sony Walkman, your Snow Beach Pullover, let your Tims tap and crank those foam headphones loud.

Keep Diggin’!
