Here’s a label I have been anticipating releases from for a while. Based out of Chicago aka the Windy City aka Chi-Town, a city that has given us so many great record labels, Cherry Records is now ready to leave their mark today’s music scene. Founded in 2012 (but with deep roots in the vinyl and record community from way back) by producer Andrew Brearly aka Meaty Ogre and Sheila Red aka DJ Shred One, this label is devoted to “release a fresh, alternative sound” in Modern Funk and Rhythm & Blues.
With a few 7″s being talked up among record heads (people like DJ Spinna, Just Blaze among others), it seems like Cherries Records is not playing around. Their roster includes Portland, OR musician/ producer Tony Ozier, Stockholm based singer/songwriter AMALIA, Doug Shorts, Cermakk, South Central Boogie Syndicate, and Benjamin. So far there have been three releases: Tony Ozier’s “The Funk b/w Back To The Mitten”, AMALIA’s “Welcome To Me b/w Bonafide”, and Cermakk & Doug Shorts’ “Feels So Right b/w Love’s Gone Wrong”.
We think they are definitely on to something. The Cherries Records’ sound is definitely fresh. Ranging from Ozier’s dirty driven Funk to AMALIA’s sexy, synth driven Funk and Boogie sides (with help from producer Opolopo) to Cermakk and Doug Shorts’ R & B bangers, the range of the label in its infancy is really amazing. With the exception of a guy like Dam Funk, these sounds are just not out there. Cherries does a great job of representing lovely and helping to lead the sorry state of music today in the right direction. Both founders have a strong background in the vinyl record world, and it shows with their early releases. Looking forward to hearing more from this label in the very near future. Everybody bounce, bounce, bounce…Cherries Records is in the house.
