Today would have marked the 80th birthday of one Eunice Kathleen Waymon aka Nina Simone. If there is one singer that has struck a chord here at Flea Market Funk throughout the years, it has been Nina. Her courage and absolute power as a female African American performer in a time where discrimination ran rampant shows the strength that she had as a human being to persevere and rise up to be one of the best. The High Priestess of Soul was captured in this recording from 1976 at Montreax. I love it when she says “Give the drummer some….”. One of the most riveting performers of our time, Simone’s sound has been sampled and reinterpreted by a variety of producers and artists. Was there ever a singer who had such an impact on Jazz, Funk, or Soul? We don’t think so. Happy born day Nina Simone, Rest in Power!
