If you go to the core of most Soul artists, it’s the church. They started out singing in a choir and it eventually led them to secular music. This group we have today, has been wowing audiences and slaying churches all over their nation with their Soul injected Gospel music for over two decades. The Jones Family Singers consist of five sisters, two brothers, and their father, and of all this time they have been doing music, they have never released a studio album. Recorded at Jim Eno’s Public Hi-Fi, producers John Croslin and Eric Friend went over recording from the group that dated back to the 1980’s. Mostly recorded live in church, the duo picked out a few tunes and had more originals added by son Fred Jones, Jr. Bishop Fred Jones, the patriarch of the Jones Family Singers and a 30 year leader at Mount Zion Church of God In Christ in Markham, TX had this to say about the songs themselves: “Some of these songs we haven’t played in 20 years.” This has no bearing at all, because the Jones Family Singers rip it up from start to finish. In the process of making a documentary with a few songs, Austin filmmaker Alan Berg, a few songs turned into a whole record. What a pleasant surprise for this hard working, touring Gospel band to finally have a tangible, legitimate recording to their name. Known in Gospel circles for their ferocious shows, the Jones Family singers have finally brought it home from tape to vinyl.
“Someone try and shake the foundation or something happen in the family; it brings us tighter together.”- Sabrina Jones
Soulful and tender, yet powerful and moving at the same time, The Spirit Speaks is recommended if you like bands such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators. Their live show is what you also need to see, as they have won over audiences at SXSW multiple times as well as their home turf of the church. Their is a tour planned with the release of this record, so keep an eye out for the singers as they travel to spread the gospel at proper venues and festivals in the Jones way to each and every city they travel to. This release is available April 1st on Arts + Labor, so don’t miss out on this unique experience. If you’re sleeping on Gospel music, you’re missing out on some exciting Funk and Soul. The message may be different, but the music is as hard driving and soulful as any. This family is one of the best at it out there today.
