As a young DJ, I used to fill in often on an all ska show on 91.7 WLFR in Pomona, NJ. Playing everything from early tunes to contemporary ska tunes of the day (re: early 90’s), I grew to have a soft spot for horn sections, cheeky covers, and the reggae’s great grand pappy: ska music. Ska is most definitely still alive today with tons of energy as well as bands that carry on the tradition of the masters while giving each cover tune their own twist. One of today’s leaders is Italian ska, soul, and rocksteady giants The Blue Beaters. Active and on the forefront of the scene since 1994, four records and several gold records under their belt later, The Blue Beaters are back with some new music on Record Kicks. This forty five will have you skanking to the beat from the first needle drop. Both sides offer up some great music, with a cover of the Northern tune “Catch That Tear Drop” by The Five Royales and Britney Spears’ “Toxic” (all ska-ed up) on the flip. The Blue Beaters do their best to inject some of the finest ingredients into each release, and this 7″ will have you moon stomping at your desk or in the car. Available September 22nd online and at finer record stores everywhere, get up and do the ska with The Blue Beaters.
