When a chance meeting in an airport in Romania brought Scott Hendy aka Boca 45 and DJ Woody together after DJing separately at events in the country, little would either know that this said chance meeting would bear the fruits of a creative collaboration. Boca 45, the Bristol legend, known for collaborations with Andy Smith in Dynamo Productions, solo efforts on a plethora of record labels, and hand picked by Banksy to DJ the opening of Dismaland in ’15, knows his way around a funky beat and a seven inch record. DJ Woody, native of Lancashire, twice DJ world champion, counts Grammy winners, and counts Mixmaster Mike & Q Bert as fans, is one of the most creative turntablist around. After their impromptu summit at an airport gate they set out to do a project. Without any set guideline, they took their craft of reworking record sounds, using vintage drum machines and synths, and their love of hip hop music to let this project grow organically into the NW/SW EP.
“The Hands” illustration exclusive by Mike Winnard
This EP contains six tracks that run the gamut from dusty funk scratched to perfection, required B Boy breaks, uptempo electro, as well as eastern soundtracks, and more. The physical form of the package is where it’s at. This includes a limited green vinyl 7″ record with two tracks “Ready 2 Rock” (uptempo B Boy break)/ “Hardcore” (head nodder with heavy bass). But wait, there’s more. Each side has a bonus skip proof track on each side. It also comes with two CDs. The first, the full EP is one you can rock where ever you need, and the second is an exclusive one hour long mix from the lads. The above high quality art print by well known British artist Mike Winnard, “The Hands” is also included. Inspired by the music, this is a great addition to the package. Digital versions of the EP and instrumentals are available as well. Always moving forward, the projects Hendy is involved in are really innovational and inspirational.
