Andre Williams is one of the best interviews I had the pleasure of doing. A true testament to longevity in the business. Now in 2016, at 79 years old he is back at it again. In his 6th decade of performing and now on his 5th record for Bloodshot Records, he shows no sign of slowing down. One of the greatest hustlers and performers of our time has returned to his adopted city of Detroit and is signing loud and proud about the D. Not happy at the state of it and with help from guitarists Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry, Rodriguez) and Dan Kroha (Gories, Demolition Doll Rods) he gives a psychedelic soul stomp that Funkadelic would be proud up. His gravely voice pairs perfect with this sound, and it’s a testament of the ups and downs he has faced his whole life. No matter what is happening, he is still Andre Williams. Checkered past, hirings and firings, down and out, the man just bounces back. After all he is the guy who put the word player in the game. He is resilient and is not going away that easy. So if you like “Twine Time”, “The Popcorn”, “Bacon Fat”, or any of the myriad of past hits (or misses), although this track is not the same sound, you will still dig “Detroit”. It’s heavy in sound and lyric. The Mothership may have left the D, but Andre Williams never did, so catch a ride on it as he calls for its return. Check out the track below.
