When Gizelle Smith drops some new material, we are all ears. The sultry soul siren has been steady releasing heat with for a bit, so why shouldn’t this latest forty five on Jalapeno Records be any different? Working hard and laying down her own sound that is living proof that sisters are still doing it for themselves, her work ethic and moxy are exactly what will keep her a head above the rest in this music game. The lead single, “Dust” off of her upcoming Ruthless Day LP is of course another funky bomb ready to explode on the dance floor and cause tremendous dancing damage. Her authentic vocals and a bass line that you can get down to over fatback drums (and let’s not forget the horns) make this up tempo future classic catchy as the flu. She’s a mover, and the buck doesn’t stop there. The flip, “Hey Romeo” is a funky little sassy sister soul side that will remind you of the greats like Aretha, Sugar Pie, Betty, and that late Sharon Jones, but with a Gizelle Smith twist. This one is a dancer for sure, and like the A-Side, you have got to be nonexistent if you can’t move your feet (or the dance floor for that matter) with this one. It’s a heart breaker of a track, and if you cross this lady, there is no coming back. Jalapeno and Smith have found that right recipe and slot for these records. There needs to be more records in this vein put out, but honestly, there is only one Gizelle Smith and we are thankful for that.
