There are times when music hits us and we feel like our head is going to explode Scanners style. But we assure you in a good way. When we first heard Medline doing cover versions of tracks from the La Planète Sauvage OST, we were blown away. We said something cheeky like: “this thing needs to be on vinyl.” Well wish it and will it enough and it will happen. Solstice is here, and it’s a record chock full of covers of legendary original soundtrack, library and jazz funk music. Many of these records are tough or impossible to find, and Medlin’s concept of interpreting these killer cuts and getting them all together on one record is a rare find in itself. Straight slaying the music from the previously mentioned soundtrack, Chapell library records, and from the greats like René Costy, John Cameron, Brian Bennet, Arawak, Jay Richford & Gary Stevan, as well as Lee Mason And His Orchestra, this is definitely a record that you can go back to again and again. High quality, brilliant interpretations of these songs, most of which were sampled many times before, is not just a digger’s delight, but something that needs to be in a collection. Every track was performed by Medline. He translated the compositions his way, into his world, and the end product is something we will be talking about for years. You can’t realize the amount of work that goes into making records like this with a group of people, but now just imagine what it takes for one person to play everything, reinterpret new arrangements, and come out with something spectacular like this in a small home studio. A perfect homage to these masters, breathing life into these classics for a new generation of vinyl record lovers who are discovering these tracks for the first time to enjoy. Pressed up on sea blue translucent vinyl and also available as a package with a poster by Clément Laurentin, you’d be a fool to let this one go. With a small run of 300 pieces, this is not to be missed. If this is your bag, you know what to do. Medline for the win.
