NOLA BREAKS V.7: Ernie and the Topnotes Inc. b/w Skip Easterling

If you are familiar at all with New Orleans, its rich music history touches many people. The amount of funk that has come out of the Crescent City is mind blowing, and Superjock Records has been highlighting these gems for a minute now. Their latest in the NOLA Breaks series, number seven if you’re counting is two heavies in Ernie and The Top Notes and Skip Easterling. Both tracks stand tough on their own. “Dap Walk”, with heavy drums and the “hey get up brothers” call, and “Hoochie Coochie Man” with that dope bass line and flute both get the re-lick treatment from Professor Shorthair and Mr. Boom. Beefed up, soulful breaks, and a little bit of that magic touch from France’s Mr. Boom (Mawinbi Records) go a long way on the “Dap Walk” edit while Professor Shorthair cooks up some musical gumbo with the Easterling track, throwing in just enough of the hip hop spices in the form of scratches and tight drums to keep it from bubbling over.
