Out today is the deluxe version of the master recording engineer, pianist, composer, and producer Vincent Helbers also known as Flowriders 2007 classic R.U.E.D.Y. This deluxe package, part of a thirty years of Mr. Bongo celebration features Helbers on synths, keys and programming and heavyweight musicians such as Colonel Red (vocals), Rob Mullarky (bass), and Richard Spaven (drums). Spaven has worked with Guru, Marc de Clive Lowe, Ty and others. His drumming is massive. It’s jammed with unreleased archive tracks from the studio, remixes, and outtakes, if you enjoyed this record back in ’07, then you will love it even more in 2019. If this is the first time you’re even aware of this beautiful monster of a record, then you’ll be experiencing everything for the first time. Chock full jazz sounds, broken beat, hip hop, electronica, and neo soul, this record is dope on any day of the week (even on the longest day of the year today, more time to listen to it on repeat). Applauded by everyone from Jazzanova to Gilles Peterson to Mr. Scruff, R.U.E.D.Y perfectly captures a cacophony of jazz/ soul sounds and super tight grooves that move effortlessly through the twenty three tracks. From start to finish, it’s a funky ride. It was futuristic then, it’s still futuristic and spacey, with a cosmic slop of fat drums + soulfull, jazzy riffs that go on to the break of dawn with no questions asked. Flowriders are like any other band, and Mr. Bongo is putting this deluxe right in front of your eyes and ears. Check out the record below:
