BADBADNOTGOOD/ Majestics – Key To Love (Is Understanding)

We made it to midweek y’all, and we’ve got the perfect tune for you. The crew known around the world as BADBADNOTGOOD is back, and they’re taking part in the latest installment of The Light in The Attic vinyl/ digital series. They feature Jonah Yano on vocals and get down lovely with a cover of the 1982 track “Key To Love (Is Understanding)” from Milwaukee’s pioneers of funk and soul, Majestics. The seven inch features both the original and the cover version of the track. If you’re not familiar, the original is definitely highly sought after in the digging world (as well as “Class A” considered the first rap to come out of Cream City).

As lovers of old soul, funk and rare recordings, ‘Key to Love’ has always been a song that has had an impact on our heart and ears. We hope our version relays how special this song is and gives it some new listeners and a second life. It’s an incredibly beautiful song that deserves to be heard, and we hope to play a small part in that.

BADBADNOTGOOD really do this song justice, with Yano nailing it from start to finish. You can hear, even with this cover, why the record is so highly sought after. It’s most definitely a heartbreaker, love maker and breath taker. Known for their versatile music, BADBADNOTGOOD completely crush this one. If you’re a fan (or even not..yet), you can not deny the power of this track. Given the blessing and nod from original Majestic Donald Cooper, this cover track will be highy sought after in years to come (sort of like Mayer Hawthorne’s version of “Maybe So, Maybe No”). This one is also on hot pink vinyl, with artwork by the LA-based artist Robbie Simon that adds a fine art touch to this polished classic/ reworking. Listen to both tracks below and order after the stream.
