Ripple 2.20 – Exercise My Love/ I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky

Normally this is something we might pass on here, because the original is so damn unfuckable with, we don’t want to even go near it. But, and this is a big but, the flip side of this reboot of the legendary funk band Ripple has intrigued us. It seems that original members Curtis “Kazoo” Reynolds & Keith “Doc” Samuels, who now goes by the name Ripple 2.20 have joined forces once again to make music. The A-Side is a cover of John Edwards “Exercise My Love”, a ’70s Quiet Storm that oozes wide open, wide lapel shirts, gold chains, and the scent of Egyptian musk. This is, as my old friend Miss Delores would say, is “wall grindin’ music baby”. But flip it over, because the B-Side wins again. The Fashion remix of “I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky” is straight fire. A little bit faster, a little bit dirtier, and a little bit heavier on the drums. It’s most definitely a sleazier version of this track, and even if it just remixed, we like the updated sounds. A modern, but still funky version of this absolute stone-cold classic can brighten up even the worst pessimist’s day. That break down at 2:53 is worth getting doubles for. This is done really well and the design hat tip to the original label, flipped, and redone for 2020 is a bonus. Listen to both sides of this seven inch on the stream below and purchase after the stream. Available via Izipho Soul Records. Not sure what the quantities are, but it doesn’t look like it will be hanging around too long.
