We’ll never top James Brown and his myriad of hits, but artists have been covering JB for 50 plus years and continue to do so to this day. Original Gravity has come out with a nice four song EP called Night Train. They’re paying tribute to the Godfather of Soul aka Mister Dynamite aka Soul Brother Number One in a variety of musical ways.
The EP itself has four very different versions of the 1962 smasher “Night Train”. Starting off the record, The SoCal Soul Stars do a band up funky soul version of the track. With blazing horns and more, this is a great cover to kick the 45 off. Moving on to the next banger, Junior Dell & The D-Lites take you to Jamaica and give the people what they want with a ska version of the track in “Ska Train”. Pick up change and skank through the night with this one. Our favorite on the record by far, would be The Regulators “Rocksteady Night Train” that is a head nodder from start to finish. The organ and horns really stands out in this version and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like to get down to a rocksteady beat? Let’s not forget the Latin scorcher version from Néstor Álvarez “El Tren De La Noche”, which slams as well. This Latin heater is sure to fill up the dance floor, and another shining example of how JB can translate to another genre easily when done correctly. We’ve heard Brown’s music in a variety of Latin covers and this one is up there with some of the best. Listen to snippets from the record below and pre-order after the stream.
