Funky 16 Corners and I hit the road and made it to DC in record time. After meeting up with our buddy Chris (who graciously took us around) for some real Jerk Chicken at a Carribbean joint (the more bones the better, it’s the real deal), we set out to dig. And dig we did. We hit up a secret spot just outside of DC, and had a lot of luck. From there we headed to Chris’s early DJ gig at Marvin, a great place owned by the cats from Eighteenth Street Lounge Records (Theivery Corporation). Chris killed it with some Jazz Funk from local guy Nathan Jones and Johnny Hammond classics before we headed over to Ben’s Chili Bowl. Now while Ben’s is a famous eatery in DC (Cosby and Obama are the only ones who eat for free), it’s not too healthy. It is slammin’ though. From Ben’s, we headed to Dahlak, an Eritrean eatery during the day, but a bar/venue at night that hosts DC’s premier Funk and Soul Party: Moneytown. DJ Nitekrawler started out the evening lovely with a perfect blend of HEAVY Funk 45s (can you say Sexy Coffee Pot) deep crates of local Funk and Soul records. By the time 11:30 came around, the joint was packed, and Larry and I played for 1/2 hour each for two hours. Much dancing ensued, many beers were consumed, and it was 2:45 am before we knew it. Thank you Chris and family, DJ Nitekrawler, and all the new friends I made in DC. I will be back in the area hopefully soon. I’m working on that. We’re headed out to dig for a bit this afternoon.
