Beat Drops: An All Vinyl Jaunt

Beat-Drops-Cover

This latest mix from Flea Market Funk features some different vinyl sides. Beat Drops has some cuts on it that I wanted to feature, even if they weren’t the most known sides from these artists. While they may not be the rarest of records, they are still funky in their own way. I’ve chosen artists like under rated Soul singer Angelo Bond (who scored a Top 40 Hit with “Reach For The Moon”) and his blaxploitation song that could have been, along with rediscovered sides like Mickey Murray’s “Fat Gal” from The Twin Cities Secret Stash Records, Latin infused Mongo Santamaria, Psychedelic Soul from the Temptations, Curtis Mayfield penned goodness from the movie Let’s Do It Again by The Staple Singers, Miami’s own Impact of Brass, Kool and the Gang protégés Kay Gees, a classic from Young Holt Unlimited (drums for days on that whole record), Culture of Souls reissued Original Black Sheep of the Family Soul side, and a jam from Yesterdays New Quintet. A talented cat that Madlib is. Can’t get enough of this guy as of late. There are three sides I added in from television shows, movies, and a weird cut on Polydor. The John Gregory Orchestra put out a record on Mercury where they cover all detective show themes. I chose this classic because it is oh so funky, but they also do Kojak, McCloud, Columbo, and just about every other 70’s private dick show. Jeffery Kaufman leads a group of musicians on ‘Brooklyn Is My Home” from the 1979 film The American Game, the original Hoop Dreams. Lastly, there is a track included from Max Gregor and His Orchestra, from a record sent to me by a FMF reader (thanks Dan!). This German Jazz man covers a lot of ground on this full length, including Galt MacDermot, The Stones, and more. An odd side, but it made the cut. Done all live here at the lab, I hope you enjoy listening to this one as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

  1. Can you get a download of this mix. I’d love to give it a listen in the car tomorrow

  2. Just finished listening to this. Dope. The opening track is amazing. You have to check out Mickey Murray’s “I cant tell you” when you get two minutes and four seconds.
