Monday morning never sounded so sweet with the sounds of REdefinition blasting out yo’ speaker box. The group, Mecca83, Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble & DistantStarr are long time friends and collaborators in their careers. As solo artists, each has had their respective success, but together as a crew, get as creative as they can be. Whether it’s collaborating with Hudson Mohawke or Blu,rocking European stages, or getting big upped by DJ Spinna, these cats are on to some good shit. Bahia Affair is some pure class right here, as REdefinition blends MPC beats and some Fender Rhodes for head nodding tracks you will be playing over and over. Influenced by classic Brazilian music from the 60’s and 70’s, this bossa percussion is integrated into the music to give a fresh sound to each side. Despite a bit of analog and digital on these tracks, the feel still remains very organic throughout. With guest appearances by Nardo Says and Sabrina Cuie, cuts by DJ Omas, and a killer mix from Rotterdam’s Moods, this EP is one that flew under the radar. At least until now, as it’s out of the bag and running. Containing just enough boom bap at times to have you nodding your head incessantly and incorporating a heavy injection of soul throughout, REdefinition covers all the bases lovely. This is the soulful hip hop collaborations we have grown to love, a nod to 90’s production that has more soul in one track than most of the drivel out there today. And seriously, who doesn’t like a Fender Rhodes? Summer really hasn’t ended, and the music on Bahia Affair makes sure you know that. These tracks are hot.
