Tuxedo is the brainchild of DJ/ producer/ musician Mayer Hawthorne and beat professor Jake One. With a friendship (and now work relationship) built on the exchange of mix tapes about 8 years ago, these two Grammy nominated artists form together like Voltron to bring you their signature brand of funk. Think Zapp. Shalamar, Chic, and other funky groups meeting a Snoop Dogg’s song and a finely crafted beat.
“We always wondered what the original sample was for “Ain’t No Fun.” Since we couldn’t figure it out, we decided we would make it.”
Both of these busy artists, equally talented in their own right, share their love of a certain brand of funk with this track (as well as a few others right now). The full length, due in early March will be out on the Stones Throw imprint. This marks the first return to the label for Hawthorne since 2009. The song itself is genius. Boogie away baby, because it still has the bounce of “Ain’t No Fun” and then some. All synthy and full of tripled up drum fills, Hawthorne croons just as good as Nate Dogg on this one. We are feeling this track for sure. With some changed lyrics, this is right up there with “Henny and Ginger Ale”. While that song was Marvin Gaye through and through (and way before “Blurred Lines”), “Number One” is Tha Dogg Pound all grown up. Grown and sexy folks, so keep them movin’ to the funk. Look out for more great tracks from this pair, and don’t forget your bow tie. Pure class.
Tuxedo will be taking it to the stage in Europe on these dates. Check them if you can.
