This weekend, Sunday to be exact, if you’re in the Jersey City area, author and music historian Brian Coleman will be making an appearance at Iris Records. He has been a busy man, promoting the second volume of his Check The Technique books from Coast to Coast and North of the border. On Sunday August 16th from 1PM-4PM, he will be signing books and spinning records related to the books at Chilltown USA’s best vinyl spot. Flea Market Funk will be on hand to lay down some grooves from the book’s artists, as well as some of the sampled records the artists used also. We’d love to go all 45, so we will see what happens. If you haven’t got a copy of the book, here’s your chance to pick up a very necessary piece of music history. Very well researched and well done, it gives the reader an inside look at these classic hip hop records. Liner notes for records that really didn’t have them, you get personal stories from the artists and people close to these groundbreaking releases. Brian has a great record collection as well, so he will be bringing some gems to spin, as well as talk to about some of the chapters in the book if you ask. On Saturday, he will be teaming up with Dan Le Roy (For Whom The Cowbell Tolls, Paul’s Boutique 33 1/3) at Brewerytown Beats in Philly for some ill communication. Check that out as well. If you’re in JC on Sunday, stop by, it’s FREE.
