It’s been a while since we had some Cold Rock Stuff, but fear not, CRS comes back with two versions of “It’s About Time”. A chance meeting on the NYC subway in 2012 of Mac McRaw and underground rapper Emskee connected again the following day on the last day of Big City Records, which prompted a collaboration conversation. Fast forward to 2015 and Mac McRaw remixes Emskees’s unreleased 1995 Nick Wiz produced track. The unreleased song doesn’t just get the remix, but Em flips the lyrics and rerecords the vocals for something completely new. The ’95 version is timeless, and Nick Wiz (Cella Dwellas, Rakim, Mad Skillz, etc) has that sound we all love. The horns stabs, the SP drums, it’s all there. For fans of ’90’s rap, this is a real treat. The updated version has McRaw getting busy with raw drum loops, heavy Hammond stabs, and some tasty guitar. Emskee pulls no punches and tells you how it is in 2015. Both artists have that drive that has made them as solo artists (and now together) get props outside their respective circles. Both keep it real. UK to USA, over the Atlantic and back, “It’s About Time” is one for your record box people. A timeless sound and a future classic, Cold Rock Stuff comes through once again and it’s time to clean those Timbos and take your Carhart out of the closet. As a matter of fact, you might want to take the Lex out of the garage, do a lap like Forrest Whitaker in Ghost Dog and bump both of these tracks LOUD. Check out both sides of the record below:
