From The Vaults: Live Mix From Youngstown, OH 02.26.05

Youngstown LiveAnother live mix from the vaults. Recorded on Feb. 26th, 2005 at The Cellar in Youngstown, OH, straight from the sound board, this was a short set I did before the band I was involved in played that night. It’s an all vinyl set from my record boxes I always kept on the tour bus. The radio station manager, Clyde Bass, had set it up because he liked what I spun. The funny thing is that this kind of music (funk/ soul/ hip hop) wasn’t really popular in Youngstown. They were a rock town. But we did it anyway. There is a lot of quick mixing going on throughout, and if I remember correctly I was messing with guitar pedals connected to my turntables at the time. I may or may not have been dodging cups of beer during the set as well. By this time, Youngstown, a once thriving steel city, had fallen into disrepair, gone corrupt, and was a shell of its former self. The project I was involved in became popular there, and we played the city several times a year, often getting a reception as if we’d invented rock. Kind of weird, but the set I put down that night was a reflection of what I saw around me (and what I was into at the time). I was also able to get into an abandoned radio station and dig for as much vinyl as I could carry back on the bus with me. That was a good deal. I think the unknown rock track in this set was from the stash I pulled earlier that day. I want to shout out Wes Styles (then of Rock 104) now from 97.7 WQLZ for ripping this mix and bringing it back to life again. I haven’t heard this thing in more than a decade. Another set to add from the archives, so please enjoy.
