Liquid Beat, one of the Left Coast’s most innovative and forward driven future funk (and then some)labels is at it again. This time they have linked up with Portland, OR via New Orleans producer DaiN for his Treat Yourself EP. Drawing inspiration from greats like KevBrown, DJ Quik, and Dilla, this time DainN’s signature hip hop drums and production collab with some of today’s R & B forces. From the modern funk queen out of LA, Moniquea, to Portland’s newcomer Blossom, to Seattle’s Malice & Mario Sweet, Black Spade, and Rozzi Daime, this EP is a keeper. “Gave It A Try” has Moniquea getting down over some crisp drums and synths, “Let It Go” feat Malice and Mario Sweet is hot slice of R & B laced hip hop, while the boom bap funk claps of “All’s Calm” featuring Black Spade knocks as does “Stay” with Rossi Dame. It also screams late night grind session, so LB aren’t afraid to get sexy. The stand out track on the EP to us, is up and coming vocalist Blossom. She gets busy on “Fonky”. Reminiscent of a Badulo track, and with flavor of her own, this is our favorite track on the record. Liquid Beat is at it again and this time we hope you are paying attention.
