Soul Sugar – Chase The Light

Starting our week off we have the new, full length release from Soul Sugar: Chase The Light (Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk, and Dub). We have heard a lot of music from this Parisian outfit before. Lead by the maestro Gee aka Guillaume Metenier, musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer and all around renaissance man, this record runs the gamut of good music. With special guests such as Leonardo Carmicheal and Courtney John, this record is a combination of some previously released singles and 12″ sides, as well as a few others and included versions of each. From the get go, Gee Recordings has developed their own sound. Whether it’s funk, soul, roots, or dub, or a combination of all four, it’s distinctive and infectious. It has all the great records we ahve fallen in love with from Gee: “East of The River Nile”, their ode to Augustus Pablo, Leonardo Carmichael doing a bang up version of Timmy Thomas’s “Why Can’t We Live Together”, Courtney John featured on “Take A Chance” and “All I Know”, as well as bangers such as “Melllow Mood”, the Jackie Mittoo heaters “Get Up And Get It” and “Big Car”. Primarily this record is reggae through and through, however it’s got all of those excursions in each, Soul Sugar wears their influences well as it comes out in their music. another great piece is that Dr. Lonnie Smith makes an appearance on “Take A Chance”, showing that not only has he still got it, but can transfer those soul jazz chops to a tune like this. An added bonus. We have always been huge supporters of Gee and the gang over the years, and this full length is one of the top records of the year halfway in to 2017. Listen to the entire record below and purchase it from Gee Recordings after the bandcamp stream. We are in a mellow mood and Soul Sugar keeps it going.
