Hot Border Special – Thriller

Oh we love to hear from these chaps, one of our favorite afro soul funk rock bands, Hot Border Special. It’s been a minute, but no worries, it’s well worth it. The London lads have put together a single just in time for Halloween. So while you are spinning The Fresh Prince’s “Nightmare On My Street”, The Misfits, or some iteration of Monster Mash, why not give their newest single, a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” a spin? You know people go nuts about it, and since the original is now featured in the second season of Stranger Things, why not shake them up with this funky version of the classic? HBS break it down and give the tune it’s funky afrobeat meets psychedelic style from start to finish. Recorded in Malcom Catto’s Quatermass Studios in London, where Catto oversaw this groovy take on the MJ track, it was then mastered by Mastered by Shawn Lee & Pierre Duplan, furthering the pedigree on this project. This song was originally played live by the band at shows, who feature musicians who have played and toured with the likes of Noisettes, Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Heliocentrics and Young Gun Silver Fox, so you know that they were getting the crowds all worked up with this one. Finally laying it down in the studio, they capture the spirit of the live show on this very special version. HBS draw influences from everyone from Mandrill to Funkadelic and beyond, and it’s evident on this cut that they are into the art of moving butts, if we can quote Tribe. Check out the track below, available on iTunes and Spotify. Hopefully turning up on vinyl at some point as well. Hot Border Special give you that extra trick and treat in your bag this Halloween.
