Carlton Jumel Smith – I Can’t Love You Anymore

If a track like this belter out of the Timmion Records camp does not get you right in the heart, we are not sure what will. The Timmion label captures the essence of soul music on every release they give to the world, and we are a better place for it. This debut on the label by Carlton Jumel Smith backed by Cold Diamond and Mink is a track that makes a grown man cry. No doubt influenced by the Godfather of Soul when he saw him at The Apollo Theater at just 8 years old as well as deep regional soul cuts, this lasting impression he has revealed through this song that his voice is indeed a force in modern soul music. Throughout his career, he’s given us a mixed bag of breezy soul albums, UK forty fives, and live tributes to James Brown, as well as guest spots on some soulful house 12″ records. We feel, though, that this raw performance on “I Can’t Love You Anymore” is his best output to date. Landing with the Timmion crew and their desire to create possibly the ebst soul music in the world is one of the best things since sliced bread. This tough track is a bag full of heart ache, sorrow, and a mess of emotions. Full of heavy drums and Southern soul preaching, he gives us the honest truth whether we like it or not. The Stylart house band Cold Diamond and Mink hold it down lovely and CJS is joined by Pratt from Pratt & Moody, who lays down some falsetto treats on this side. Top notch soul music once again coming from Helsinki, Finland. There is talk of Smith laying down an album’s worth of records along with this studio take, so we are eager to hear more from him soon. Raw power soul is what we are dealing with here, and we believe he has a lot more to give. This one will get stuck in your head. It’s been in ours since we first dropped the needle. The flip of the record is the instrumental track, which is a treat on its own. Listen to the music below:
