The Turbans – Baba Ganooz

Let’s switch it up today, shall we? It’s a known fact that a lot of funk, soul, and jazz heads will get into the psychedelic spectrum as time goes on (we know we have), so why not introduce a new label, who have a new record out in the psychedelic lane? Flea Market Funk alumnus Markey Funk, who has given us great releases on the Delights label, welcomes a new sister label MonaTone under that Delights umbrella. Put together by by Uri “Mixmonster” Wertheim (Radio Trip/The Apples/Kalbata & Mixmonster), it’s a home for fuzzed out rock and psych sounds that will accent the older and of course bolder experimentation in the genre. They have gone with the Jerusalem based band The Turbans for their debut forty five with the “Baba Ganooz” record. Both sides of this record definitely take you back to that sound; a nuggets influences psychedelic rock trip. Powerful, with plenty of fuzz, the A side is exactly what you’d expect if you were smack dab in the middle of this revolution in the 1960’s, but alas, it’s 2018 and this power trio are ripping through tracks like a hot guitar through a case of butter. The flip, “Lost My Mind” is a stomper of epic proportions, and a perfect accompaniment to the A. Recommended if you like your guitars fuzzy and your acid strong. These tracks are sides you would hear Todd-O-Phonic Todd play on Saturday on WFMU. So just give us credit Todd when you debut this on your show. Have a listen to both tracks below and order the seven inch, available now after the stream.
